Wealth of Nature, Healing the waters: The art of Melanie Ariens

Artist Statement by Melanie Ariens
Take a moment and reflect on our tenuous relationship with water. All life depends on it, yet we often turn our backs to it; polluting it, trying to control it, destroying natural habitats and supporting businesses that want to commodify this shared necessity. In doing this we support a disconnect from nature and the very water that sustains us all.  One way to heal the world is to heal the waters. ..

...Melanie serves as Artist-in-Residence for the Milwaukee Water Commons, which uses art as an engagement tool to develop water leadership deep in the city...

A Wealth of Nature Featured artist: The pastel painting of Colette Odya Smith

Artist’s statement by Colette Odya Smith:
It seems to me many mysteries and miracles are lying in plain sight, patiently awaiting discovery. Such things as a fallen leaf or the clouds reflected in a still pool call out to be seen and understood.  My heart knows there is more going on than simple appearance and so I feel compelled to respond and explore what lessons are there to be learned. This desire to see and understand more clearly has taken form in my paintings, moving them beyond simple depiction into expressions of what I glimpse beyond the physical.

IAPS 36th Juried Exhibition Gallery Walkthrough

from: redweberiaps@gmail.com

Hello Artists,

Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sabrina Hill, President of the Pastel Society of the West Coast, to conduct a Virtual Gallery Walkthrough of the IAPS 36th Juried Exhibition.

The theme of the discussion was on the diversity of pastel and how the medium is being utilized in an array of expressive ways from traditional schools of representationalism to some very avant-garde/modern applications.

Thirty-six paintings in the exhibition were chosen and I hope that my observations prove to be insightful as we celebrate all things pastel. A list of the artists and painting titles can be found in the description of the YouTube video.

Please enjoy this video:
Gallery Walkthrough

Don't forget to view and/or purchase THE CATALOG, an expanded view of the 36th Juried Exhibition, which contains additional educational content.

Best,
Richard G. McKinley

Lyn Rix is being featured in American Art Collector Magazine

from: lynn@lynnrix.com

Exciting News to share

A few weeks ago I received an email identified as coming from an editor of the national magazine American Art Collector. Of course I thought it was spam and ignored it for a few days. But before I deleted it, I did some investigating and it was actually ligit ! I called the editor and she invited me to be in the June issue of the magazine's " Artist Focus " section. I said yes and also decided to place an ad which allows me to have 20 of my paintings in their on-line gallery. The magazine hits the news stands in late May and can also be viewed on-line. www.americanartcolletor.com

I am incredibly honored and still can't figure out how they found me and why they asked me. I am thrilled and grateful . The spring and summer shows I was supposed to be in have been closed, cancelled or postponed. I guess it is time for me to go national ! I hope you are all staying healthy, safe and enjoying some creativity. Happy Summer !

Milwaukee Sketch Club practicing social distancing at Delafield Fish Hatchery 5/5/20

Sunny and got up to 70F by the time we left.
Reflections started out dark but time we left they were lighter.
We may be going out more than once a week whenever the weather is nice since a lot of events, even outside plein-airs have been canceled. It's easy to practice social distancing while painting.

Richfield Art At the Mill - Call for Artists

From: Richfield Art at the Mill <artfairrhs@gmail.com>

Richfield Art At the Mill
Saturday, July 25, 2020

Call for Artists
Are you looking for an outdoor art fair at which to exhibit? Art at the Mill is still scheduled to take place. You are invited to apply to exhibit at this juried art and fine craft fair held in beautiful Richfield Historical Park, Richfield, WI (Washington County). This is the 12th year for the event. If this event has to be cancelled, all of your fees will be refunded.

You will find this event to have:
  • reasonable booth & jury fees
  • easy unload and reload arrangements
  • ample space between booth spaces (this may be increased to help with social distancing)
  • friendly, helpful staff
  • free homemade pastry & coffee during setup

Because we know the success of this event depends upon our exhibitors, we strive to advertise to the fullest extent of our ability to attract attendees. We use newspapers, fliers, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest), websites and signage to promote the fair.

For those who exhibited at this event in 2019, construction kept some visitors from navigating an 'unfriendly' road. That construction is completed and will not affect the 2020 Art at the Mill.

Click here for the link to the Guidelines and Application Form. You can also find the document on the Richfield Historical Society website: richfieldhistoricalsociety.org (Home Page, Left Side, Scroll Down.)

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
