Support my Project! Think Inside the Box!

From: Jeanne Nikolai Olivieri <jnoart@gmail.com>

Dear Friends and Art Supporters,

I’m doing a MARN microfellowship! This is a crowd-funding campaign through the Milwaukee Artist Resource Network for my new interactive installation piece, Think Inside the Box ©™. I’m very excited about this project, and need your help to finance its creation. My goal is to raise $5200 between now and July 30, 2016. See below for the project description!

·       Donors of $50 to $99 will receive a 3 x 4-1/2” matted original watercolor painting.
·       Donors of $100 - $199 will receive an original 5 x 7” inch watercolor painting.
·       Donors of $200 to $299 will receive an 8 by 10” watercolor painting.
·       Donors of over $300 will be given an evening studio tour for six with wine and nibbles, and an 8 by 10” original watercolor.
·       10% of funds raised will go to MARN, a non-profit arts organization

Any amount of donation is welcome! If all goes well, the project will be finished and installed for the July 22, 2016 Gallery Night. Please support Think Inside the Box!

Project description:

As an artist, I am constantly putting my work “out there.”  This can be both liberating and daunting. There is the little doubt in the back of my head, the overheard critique of a stranger at an opening, or an unexpected visitor to my studio offering suggestions and “shoulds”. While I often enjoy painting and creating in public and value critiques and opinions, to truly stretch my boundaries, take chances, and liberate ideas, it is necessary for me to take a break from outside influences and focus on expression without diversions, opinions and interruptions.

When I need to let loose my innermost thoughts and ideas free of vulnerability, I go into my “zone,” with the door closed, music on, outside distractions and diversions silenced. Here I can think clearly, plot, experiment, throw paint, write wild and crazy ideas, meditate, and prepare for return to the outside world with a renewed sense of creative strength and artistic enlightenment.

I intend to share creative freedom with others through my new project Think Inside the Box.  It will be composed of three distinct intimate box environments:  the Lounge, designed to spark new ideas; the Drawing Room, a warm and comfortable space; and the Retreat, a peaceful and organic environment.  They will be safe places where thinkers, writers, visual artists, and risk-takers can tangibly express their innermost thoughts and creative ideas without fear of judgment. All are welcome and there are no requirements.  Confessions can be made, stories can be told, ideas sketched, or participants can simply sit quietly to think or meditate.  Visitors are encouraged to sketch, draw, dream, and communicate their secret selves inside the Box.

Sketching and writing materials will be provided to visitors who choose to record and share their thoughts and ideas on paper. These expressions can be signed or remain anonymous. Works will then be collaged to the walls inside the Boxes as a testament to our secret selves and to what, as creative humans, we choose to share with others.

The initial Think Inside the Box installation will be erected in my studio and serve as a prototype.  The ultimate goal is to build transportable structures that can be reconstructed and shared with others at museums and art centers.

Artists in the Garden 8/20-21, 2016

From: Mary Prince <mary.prince88@yahoo.com>

Bigger.  Better. 2016.

Thank you for participating in our first Artists in the Garden event in September 2015. It was a fun weekend, but the September date meant that the gardens were past-peak and the Packers drew away Sunday visitors.
This year the League of Milwaukee Artists and Boerner Gardens will hold Artists in the Garden in August, with more flowers, more artist tents, and a professional approach.
The plein air competition will have REAL prizes ($1000, $500, $250)  and professional plein air painter Shelby Keefe as our judge.
In case you have not seen our posting on the Wisconsin Plein Air Painter's association calendar, here is the link.

We are happy to invite you back for the new Artists in the Garden event.

Plein Air Shorewood 9/17/2016

Shorewood Celebration of the Arts & Plein Air Shorewood 2016

lorrainemcfarlandplensaThe Village of Shorewood Public Art Committee invites all to Celebrate the Arts on Saturday, September 17, 2016. The one-day community-wide event will include a free community breakfast and rededication of the iconic Jaume’ Plensa sculpture. It will also host a free, one-day plein air event at Atwater Park near the sculpture, culminating in a happy hour celebration with food and beverage available for purchase, live music, and a cacophony of professional artists selling their work and other art.

Event Goals and Scope:
  • Date: Saturday, September 17, 2016, from 8am to 8pm

  • Location: Atwater Park, located at the east end of Capitol Drive.

  • The celebration will appeal to all age groups and will focus on paying tribute to the fifth anniversary of the placement of the Plensa Sculpture in the park, as well as be host to plein air artists and musicians.

  • All Plein Air artists who have participated in the previous Plein Air Shorewood events will be invited back to again paint and sell artwork in the park – beginning at dawn and continuing throughout the day.  Sign up here. There is No Fee. No commission. This is a day of Celebration, and the community is invited to paint and create alongside the professionals.

  • Live music, beverage and food will be provided for sale all day for the enjoyment of all residents, artists, the wider community, and individuals wishing to pay tribute to the artists and to the Jaume’ Plensa sculpture.

  • All are welcome to go outside and paint in Shorewood. Professional artists will sell their work from their easels until 8pm. The best place to see finished art will be at the Happy Hour at the Lake, from 4-7pm. All sales conclude by 8pm.

Schedule of Day

Breakfast: Saturday, September 17, 8-10AM Art Kickoff and Celebration

Traditional Plein Air Birthday Breakfast Saturday morning featuring the Public Art Committee, Volunteer Groups, Shorewood dignitaries, elected officials, Village administration and hopefully the artist himself to give out free breakfast and coffee to all. Artist check-in. Entertainment featuring Music and artists arriving, painting, and heading out to find locations throughout Shorewood.
Artists and community are invited to create artwork outside in Shorewood throughout the day. Tent remains throughout the day at Atwater Park as a Plein Air Headquarters.
Happy Hour and Art Display and Sale: 4-7pm at Atwater Park
Happy Hour 4-7pm: Artists check back in and arrange easel and finished piece. All are welcome to celebrate the arts, food and beverage for sale, and celebrate Shorewood with music and art.

Produced by the Public Art Committee of Shorewood.
Questions/Contact: Jenny Heyden, Plein Air Director,  Info@pleinairshorewood.com
Q/A:
Why so small scale this year: The Public Art Committee will be launching a new public work currently targeted for October, 2016, thus the 2016 Plein Air Event has been simplified to one day, and the community invited to share the experience alongside artists.

Who can sell: Only professional artists possessing a seller’s permit will be authorized to sell work.
Parameters of artwork:
  • Artwork of Shorewood, WI
  • May be a piece from a previous year
  • Does not need to be any particular size – if it fits on easel, it’s ok.

  • No vending tents or structures of any kind are allowed.
  • Other parameters may be added prior to the event

Bucketworks Closes

from: info@schoolfactory.org

We transferred the most recent Bucketworks space in the Grand Avenue Mall to new ownership (a past Bucketworks member!) in mid-2015, so we could focus on supporting our wider network of collaborative spaces and educational learning programs. It's now being operated as a co-working space called the Milwaukee Cooperative.

Bucketworks was one of the very first collaborative spaces in the country in 2002. Over its 13 year history in 4 different Milwaukee locations, it spawned dozens of new businesses, and hosted regular arts performances, community workshops, technology hack-a-thons, and professional meetups. Companies like Manpower International, GE Healthcare, and Harley Davidson used Bucketworks to develop new strategies, new products, and new organizational cultures based on collaboration and transparency, while local community organizations like Newaukee and Spreenkler were formed and incubated within its program. Its models for integrated learning methods and community engagement inspired other collaborative spaces and educational innovators throughout the United States and abroad.

While most people in the Milwaukee-area only know us by Bucketworks, School Factory does a lot of other things too! We are now in the full-time business of helping learning communities start, grow, and thrive.

Thanks to everyone who helped make Bucketworks a success over the course of its 13 year history. We accomplished great things!

The Future of Learning: June 6th
An evening of hands-on exploration & discovery

Join us
as we reconnect with the Milwaukee community post-Bucketworks, share our vision of the future, and present new models for learning on June 6th. Learn more and register here!

Schedule:
5:00pm Doors Open
5:30-7:30pm Main program
7:30-8:00pm Open Discussion

School Factory asks questions about how we can develop a more qualified workforce, improve student engagement and achievement, and provide opportunities for everyone to learn in ways that make them more effective, successful, happy, and healthy.
If you are interested in these questions too - if you are passionate about transforming education, building learning communities, or thinking in new ways - please join us for an event that will provide a window into how hands-on experiences that integrate creative, technical, social and personal learning can begin to provide answers.
You will...
  • Meet other people who want to connect across disciplines and create new education methods
  • Experience first-hand what integrated hands-on learning experiences are like through a series of activities
  • Learn about some of the work being done by cutting edge local organizations
  • Explore important themes and questions around learning
  • Encounter perspectives about the positives and negatives of popular trends in education like “making” “innovation” and “STEM” - let’s cut through the hype!
Join us on Monday evening, June 6th!

 What's Next for School Factory

We provide a number of services for collaborative spaces and other hands-on learning communities. We are working hard to provide stellar support for these groups and to push forward the conversation about how to integrate the values of inclusiveness, full-person development, and health.

Our new website provides more information about the specific ways we support hands-on learning communities. We will continue to refine and expand the site over time.

We will use this newsletter to feature:
  • Stories from collaborative spaces and innovative learning programs in our network
  • Progress on strategic development of our core operations and new programs
  • School Factory events like The Future of Learning (above)
  • Interesting articles and news about hands-on learning

What is Wisdom, exactly? How do we acquire it? How is it transmitted? What Wisdom can we learn from our ancestors? What part does Wisdom have in the Jewish tradition? What is Wisdom Literature? Who are the Wise people around us, in our community, in our families, in history? What makes us wise?

These are some of the questions that the Jewish Artists’ Laboratory has been struggling with for the last year. Thanks to a generous grant from the Covenant Foundation, the Lab was founded in 2010. The Artists’ Laboratory is a group of local professional artists who meet twice a month at the JCC. They study “Jewish Texts” together... “Text” in this context includes both traditional Jewish texts: Bible, Talmud, Commentary, and Liturgy. But, for the Laboratory, a “Text” could be a contemporary poem, or a piece of music, or a video, or a story, or a photograph, or so much more. Everything is filtered through the prism of Jewish History, or Community, or Religion, or Thought, or Personal Life, or the Jewish People. The artists are of all media: painting, sculpture, music, dance, theater, poetry, photography, printmaking, and more. They have turned their study and deliberation into art – art that will be on display or performed at the JCC and is open to the entire community throughout the summer.

For the artists themselves, we have created a community of artists: they are different, yet all committed to their art. Their approaches to the Jewish world and to being Jewish are diverse, yet every year they have created an astonishing selection of works of art – all created for our annual exhibits. This year, our topic is “Wisdom,” and the artists have created thought provoking works that allow us to enter the topic in imaginative ways. We have learned from the past. We have learned from texts and other works of art. We have learned from each other.

Our sages have told us, “Who is wise? One who learns from everyone.” (Pirkei Avot) Come to the exhibit, and judge for yourself.
