Gary Mallard Portrait Demo in Oil

Gary talked about the importance of practicing and learning to draw. He used a dry brush method with a stiff brush for blending.

He currently uses canvas paper as his substrate which he tapes to a drawing board. He uses ivory black and titanium white with liquin to make the (Grisaille) gray tone underpainting. The multiple layers of transparent oils are painted on top.

Once he likes a painting he uses a paint brush to paint elmers glue or titebond on the canvas paper and a primed, sanded, masonite panel. Then he uses a rolling pin to remove air bubbles.

He starts out by indicating the location of the eyes, nose, mouth and chin. Also draws an "X" from each eye through nose to each mouth edge. You also can measure and make a triangle from eye corners to nose tip.

He suggested watching youtube videos of Renso Art and Andrew Tischler.
