Brian Hofmeister is hosting the  Muskego Community Art event hosted by Muskego Circle Community Center and M Catering Friday, April 8 from 5pm

He wants plein air artists to be set up, and painting from a landscape photo to demonstrate and educate the public about Plein Air painting.  The opportunity

available upon request.

Subject: Call for Artist Demonstration
To:

Hello Artist Friends,

I would like to share with you a call for art in an event I am coordinating on April 8th.

It’s a first ever arts and culture event of its kind hosted in Muskego.  It will be hosted at the Muskego Circle Community Center hosted at Lakepoint Church - which was just named business of the year and is highly acclaimed by it’s local chamber of commerce.  Plenty of advertisement is taking place through facebook adds, the local chamber, and an extensive mailing list through the M.Catering and event management group.

The emphasis is on live demonstrations of artwork.

You are welcome to setup a traditional 10x10 booth space, but if you can also demonstrate your work we believe this will maximize the exposure of the arts to this local context.

14 artists are already registered.  We will likely cap registration at 20.

Details and registration are here: https://lakepoint.ccbchurch.com/form_response.php?id=80

Deb Groesser Workshop, Dubuque IA

from: mricl4hlth
@gmail.com

Fundamentals of Plein Air Painting Instructor: Debra Joy Groesser AIS, PAAC, APA Debra Joy Groesser has garnered national attention for her landscape paintings. She has won numerous awards, and her work has been featured in several major art magazines including a feature article in the Oct/Nov 2014 issue of Plein Air Magazine. Debra was a faculty member at the 2014 and 2015 Plein Air Conventions in Monterey, California.
She is CEO/President and a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, and a Signature Member of Plein Air Artists Colorado and American Plains Artists. Debra is represented by SouthWind Gallery (Topeka KS), Vanessa Rothe Fine Art (Laguna Beach CA) and Geren Gallery (Tubac AZ). Her work can be viewed at: DebraJoyGroesser.com.

Workshop Objectives: ▶ Choosing the right equipment ▶ Mixing a full range of colors from a limited palette ▶ Seeing and accurately portraying values in landscape painting ▶ Narrowing your composition when facing that vast scene outdoors ▶ Quickly blocking in a painting using simple abstract light and shadow shapes ▶ Using plein air studies and reference photos to create effective studio paintings - plein air studies can make a big difference in your studio work!

Workshop Contact: Morgan Kohlwes ◆ (314) 680-3328mrawdubuque@gmail.com Cost: $490 (deposit: $100) Cost will include one evening reception and one gallery tour
Participants: Minimum:12 - Maximum:16 Workshop Presented by: Mississippi River Art Workshops, an affiliate of Dubuque County Fine Arts Society Fundamentals of Plein Air Painting with Debra Joy Groesser | June 20-24, 2016

Material List Questions contact: Morgan Kohlwes ◆ (314) 680-3328mrawdubuque@gmail.com

Oil Paints: Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White, Ivory, Black, Yellow Ochre. Debra uses mainly Gamblin brand but bring whatever you have on hand. Gamblin’s Cadmium, Yellow Medium is closer Cadmium Yellow Light in most other brands. Brushes: Hog Bristle Flats or Filberts, size 2, 4 and 6. Soft bristle synthetic bright or flat (such as Creative Mark, or Blick (Master Synthetic) for blending, size 4 or 6. One small round soft sable type (synthetic) brush for details. Palette knife Primed canvas or linen panels: (whichever you prefer to work on): 10 of either 8x10 or 9x12, two 11x14 or 12x16. 6x8’s are also a good size for practicing on if you’d like to bring a few of those.

Alternative (and less expensive option): You can use pieces of primed linen or canvas cut from a roll and taped onto foam core board or a firm board such as masonite. Cut each piece of canvas about 10x12 (for 6x8), 12x14 (for the 8x10’s) and 16x18 (for 11x14’s). This will allow for stretching onto stretcher bars later if you would like. Tape off a 6x8, 8x10 or 11x14 area in the center of the canvas. ODORLESS paint thinner or mineral spirits: Gamsol or Turpenoid. Small jar: or container for paint thinner (for cleaning brushes). Debra will be teaching and demonstrating in oils Small palette cup: for clean turp to mix with paint. Paper Towels: 2 rolls. Small trash bag or plastic grocery bags: 1 or 2 for each day. Easel: French easel or pochade box with tripod is preferable.
You can use it inside as well. Be sure to have a palette if you bring a French easel or an easel other than a pochade box. Paper palettes are not recommended for outdoors – they tend to blow away. I do have a couple of extra easels (French and a couple of pochades) that are available to borrow if you don’t have one. First come first served. Sketchbook/pencil: for thumbnail sketches and value studies. Landscape reference photos to paint from: In case weather doesn’t cooperate and we can’t go outside. I will have some that you can use if you prefer. Wet Painting Carrier: If you have a wet painting carrier box for the size of canvases you will be using, bring it.
Otherwise a flat box such as a pizza box will also work. I recommend painting carriers from RayMar Art, www.raymarart.com or PanelPak, www.panelpak.com. If you have any questions about supplies, please feel free to call or email Debra Joy Groesser at 402-592-6552 or debra@debrajoygroesser.com

In this five day workshop you will learn the fundamentals of plein air painting, learning to create harmonious landscape paintings through the use of a limited palette. The first day will be indoors in the studio, learning techniques and tips practicing in preparation for painting outdoors. Weather permitting, remaining days will be outdoors.

Awards for Richeson75 small works 2016 competition

Small Works
2016

In Wisconsin's Fox Valley? Stop in and see the show in person!

The awards for the Richeson75 Small Works 2016 competition were presented this evening by Awards Juror Jeff Hargreaves. His comments follow each selection.
Juror's Statement:

When judging a show, it helps me to set up certain guidelines.  I will look for qualities like composition, drawing, media handling, texture, content or concept and finally, with all else aside, does the piece stand on it's own as a beautiful piece of art.  There are many, many pieces in this show that are great examples of all those points.  Having those guides helps me a great deal in my selections.

As usual, there are always many wonderful pieces to consider, to mull over, to come back to, to consider again and again, but mostly there are a lot of works that are nice to just sit and look at!  At the end of the day, I really like this show.  The quality of all the pieces made jurying this show enjoyable, interesting and very inspiring.

Art at the Mill

from: artfairrhs
@gmail.com
We are one month closer to the warm months. It may not be too early to think about deciding the art fairs in which you want to exhibit. Art at the Mill is a juried art & fine craft fair to be held on July 23, 2016.  The fair is held outside nestled among the trees and surrounded by historical buildings in the beautiful Richfield Nature/Historical Park (Washington County - Wisconsin.) Would you be interested in applying?

Amenities for exhibiting artists:

  • Ample space between booths
  • Easy pull-up for unloading
  • Reasonable $55 booth fee (before or on 4-1-16) or $65 (between 4-2-16 and 7-1-2016)
  • Low jury fee of $10 (waived for returning artists)
  • Bottled water for each booth (2)
  • Booth reliever
  • Free coffee/pastries during setup time
  • Tickets for historic buildings tour located in the park
  • Friendly staff

The quality of our fair is very important. The number of like exhibitors will be limited to assure a good balance and variety. In fact, we are not accepting applications for jewelry and wood artists as our quota has been filled. For other media, be sure to apply early to improve your chance of selection.

Advertising is also very critical for art fairs.  This event will be widely advertised in print, broadcast & social media and promoted through many local businesses. We want to reach as many potential attendees as possible. Free admission to the fair and the extra benefit of being able to tour historic buildings are attractive factors to encourage attendance.

An application form and guidelines are available at: www.richfieldhistoricalsociety.org.

(Home Page under Upcoming Events - 2016 Events - Art at the Mill-Call for Artists.)  Feel free to call or e-mail with any questions.

WIPAPA: IMPT: Info About the Future of WIPAPA

From: WIPAPA <mricl4hlth@gmail.com>

In 2006 I started instigating the beginnings of WIPAPA . Having been bitten by the plein air bug and seeing the advantages of another state organization of plein air artists and the advantages of artists painting in community we dug in and begin to build. Together we have created one of the most active plein air organizations in the country!

  • I see plein air as cutting edge in terms of creating new collectors of original art therefore changing culture in our state.
  • I see children growing up in communities where it has now become normal to see artists painting on the streets.
  • I see organizations and communities benefiting financially when artists descend.
  • I see an enormous body of cherished paintings documenting this beautiful state we live in reminding their owners that this is what they felt, smelled and saw.
  • I see artists who normally work in isolation gathering together in friendship, helping each other by sharing artists secrets freely, forging friendships across economic, political, racial and social boundaries.
  • I have seen some of you become so skilled as to begin to be seen on a national level.

Plein Air painting has done all of this good. But there is so much more for us to do!!!

You may have heard that at the WIPAPA holiday party in January I announced that December 31st 2016 would be my final day as the day to day administrator of WIPAPA. I have loved serving you but have had some life changes and I believe for the organization to grow others need to contribute. I am not planning to leave the group however I see myself as more of an Ambassador after that.

It is my hope that a number of you would be willing to step up and serve on a board. The group may wish to review and update the current mission statement as well. To this end we will be using many tools to ascertain a vision for the future of WIPAPA. I am telling you this now so that I can pass on the knowledge I have gained before I leave.

Here are just some of the tasks that will need warm bodies:

  • Blog administrator: the blog acts as a communication tool or clearinghouse for all things "Plein Air" in Wisconsin. It's possible for more than one person to do this.
  • Website Director: The group may wish to expand it's web presence in this way.
  • Event Director: We have had anywhere from 1 to 3 juried shows at various venues each year. This could also be broken down into parts for more than one person. Over the years I have found ways to simplify this process immensely!
  • Monthly open paint day Facilitator: Finding venues and announcing them.
  • We could use both a Bookkeeper and an Accountant: I have always believed we should become a Not for profit but you should decide that.
  • Ambassador: I would still be willing to do the work of meeting with communities to help them develop new events...I spend a great deal of time with this.
Please be thinking about these things as we move into the plein air season and watch for communications this year that may ask for your opinions. It's your group...lets make it even better!!

Please share this info!

The plein truth,
Wendie Thompson
