The Challenges of Framing Art by Xanadu Gallery Owner Jason Horejs

 from: reddot@xanadugallery.com

All I have to do is say the word "frame", and I see artists get a dejected, depressed look in their eyes. Framing has long been the bane of painters, photographers, pastelists, pencil artists and all others who work in two-dimensions. Framing art is time-consuming and expensive, and just when you think you've found the right frame, your clients let you know otherwise.

Framing costs impact your bottom line and change the way you price your work. Finding a good framer in your area can prove an exhausting challenge.

Is it any wonder that many artists are moving away from framing?

With all of those hurtles, is it any wonder that many artists are moving away from framing?

Richfield Art at the Mill - July 26, 2014

From: Richfield Art Fair artfairrhs@gmail.com

Richfield Art at the Mill is a juried fine arts and plein air painting event to be held on July 26, 2014. This is the 6th year for this event. The fair is held outside in beautiful Richfield Historical Park located in Richfield, WI (Washington County.)

From 2012 to 2013, the number of exhibiting artists increased from 28 to 67; the number of attendees doubled from 500 to 1,100 (hoping for more in 2014 as July 27, 2013, was a cold, windy day.) Many of the 2013 exhibiting artists have already submitted their applications for 2014.

For the exhibiting artists:
  • Ample space between booths
  • Reasonable $50 booth fee (prior to 6/20/2014); after 6/20/2014, $60
  • Low jury fee of $10
  • Discount on food
  • Booth reliever
  • Free coffee/pastries during setup time
  • Tickets for historic buildings tour located in the park
An application form and guidelines are attached. These forms are also found on the Richfield Historical Society's website: www.richfieldhistoricalsociety.org. On the Home Page (right side) click on the Artists Application and Guidelines link. Photos of the 2013 event and the park are also located at the previously-mentioned link.

I would be delighted if you would consider applying for Richfield Art at the Mill. Feel free to call or e-mail me with any questions

from: WIPAPA mricl4hlth@aol.com via mail75.atl51.rsgsv.net

http://wipapa.blogspot.com/2013/10/open-paint-november-23rd-thompson.html

Mark your calendars and plan on coming to the annual paintout at the Thompson home and area in Ashippun (southeast Dodge County)! One change: the 4th Saturday is the weekend before Thanksgiving this year! It is our last shindig of 2013! All are welcome!

Also...guess who is turning 60!! Yup...me! Can't think of a better way to celebrate than painting with my friends! (no gifts!) I'm making a cake!

Located 8 miles north of Oconomowoc on Hwy 67 the area offers much fodder for painting plein air!! As always we will begin at 8AM (you can come earlier but the coffee won't be on till 8!) As is tradition I will be making a big pot of homemade soup for our lunch/critique at noon! I would love an e-mail or Facebook post to let me know how many will come so I can plan accordingly. Bring either some good bread, some fruit, cheese or a treat to share!!

Address: See
http://wipapa.blogspot.com/2013/10/open-paint-november-23rd-thompson.html

Parking: Please take the turn onto Hwy EE and park along the frontage Rd by the church!!!

Tip for photographing a glassed piece of art

From: Chapman Carol

I recently had surprisingly good luck photographing a glassed piece of art.  Don't know if this would work for everyone.

It was dusk, or nighttime.  I laid the art on the floor on a white sheet of plastic.  The ceiling above was plain off-white.  I turned off all the lights in the room.  I set my Cascio digital point-and-shoot camera on "no flash," stood over the painting, centered it, and shot.  There was a small flash from the light meter.  The resulting photo had NO reflections!  Color was GREAT!
