Collaborative Art Brightening the Milwaukee Streets
With buckets of bright-colored paint
and wide paintbrushes, dozens of volunteers took to the street Sunday
and created a work of art out of an otherwise dark city intersection
below a wide and low railroad viaduct.
Called "A Common Denominator," the
graphic painting, made by local artists, neighbors and inmates, among
others, brings a cheery choo-choo train to the corner of W. Fond du Lac
Ave. and W. Locust St.
The making of the artwork begins a
yearlong temporary public art initiative along 20 blocks of Fond du Lac
Ave., between N. 17th and 37th streets, that will feature the work of
nine artists. It is also the first public artwork by one of Milwaukee's
more widely known artists, Reginald Baylor.
An opening celebration for "Art on Fond du Lac" will be held June 29.
The weekend will include performances from Wild Space Dance Company,
the North Division Boys & Girls Club, First Stage Children's Theater
and student dance company Swag Prep.
