Presenting the 2013 Plein Air Artists

Over the coming weeks we will be presenting the plein air artists who will be participating in this years’ Great America’s Plein Air Paint-Out.   We are so excited to be able to once again share the beauty of the Forgotten Coast with these talented individuals.

Greg LaRock is joining us for the first time all the way from Newport Beach CA, and will be hosting one of our Workshops this year.  Greg is a signature member of both LPAPA and ASMA and an artist member of the CAC; Greg LaRock has won numerous awards for his painting excellence at plein air events in Easton (MD), Newport Bay (CA), and Callaway Gardens (GA).  He has also been featured in Southwest Art’s “Artist to Watch” column, included in Jack Richeson’s Fine Art Series book “Plein Air New Mexico” and is a sought-after instructor for plein air workshops.  “The challenge of depicting the three-dimensional world onto canvas is a difficult pursuit, but when it all comes together, it is an extremely rewarding experience.  Making it look realistic, yet having a completely loose, painterly feel is my ultimate goal in a successful painting." www.greglarock.com

Mary Erickson hails from Marshville NC and has stated that "As it gets more difficult to find 'natural' areas to paint, we must set aside the undeveloped for future generations.  It is not enough that we leave only paintings and photographs of what once was.  My residence in NC is slated to be left as a bird sanctuary and artist retreat, a place to listen to the wind and birdsong, to return to our roots as part of a greater whole.  Every painting I complete is a step to further that goal." (www.HighRidgeGardens.org).  Raised in CT, conservationist Mary Erickson has been painting professionally since 1993 and maintains studios in FL and NC.  Working on location, Erickson portrays the shoreline with commitment to the subject and captures the essence of the coastal landscape.  Her paintings have garnered numerous awards and hang in many private and corporate collections.  She is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and has exhibited with the American Impressionist Society, the Oil Painters of America, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and the National Arts Club.   www.maryericksonart.com

Luke Buck was born in Indiana and raised under the influence of his artist father, Harold Buck. He began his career in 1959 as a commercial artist, but evolved into solely fine arts by the early 1970s. Buck enjoys working in many mediums including oil, acrylic, graphite and his personal favorite watercolor. His favorite subject to paint is the rural American landscape with wildlife painting as his second choice. Buck is primarily a studio artist but also enjoys plein-air painting. In his words, “Art is my life, my blood and my soul. It always has been and always will be. I cannot even glance at anything without studying, analyzing, measuring, contemplating or simply enjoying and appreciating it.” His work is in private collections in every state in the United States and worldwide. www.lukebuckart.com
