The Cedarburg Cultural Center is proud to announce a three-day plein air
workshop with fine artist Steve Gerharts. Held outdoors, the artist
will demonstrate painting in oils for the first two hours. Students will
have the rest of class to work on their paintings while the instructor
provides individual instruction to students painting within 400 yards.
About the instructor: Steve Gerhartz (b. 1971) currently resides in
Wisconsin. He has been painting en plein air since 1986. The Lyme
Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut, is where he received his
formal training in landscape, portrait, figurative painting, and
sculpture. In 1992, Gerhartz was the recipient of the Stobart Outdoor
Painting Fellowship. After attending the Lyme Academy of Fine Art, Steve
moved back to Wisconsin to begin a full-time career as an artist.
"Painting outside on my own as a professional artist has been a great
experience, I am constantly learning from nature and understanding what
happens in certain lighting conditions. I paint on location in all
sizes; even very large paintings are started outside. There is nothing
quite as emotional for me as working on a large painting outdoors,
trying to capture all that form and space into a painting."
Currently, Steve works on landscapes, still-lifes, and portraits for
gallery shows in a number of midwestern galleries, and he has
consistently taught workshops in both painting and sculpture for the
past twenty years. Steve is comfortable working with students of all
ages and artistic levels since most of his teaching is done one on one.
