Visiting Artist
Nationally recognized contemporary sculptor
Mark Fischer
Saturday & Sunday, May 12 & 13
Mark Fischer is a nationally recognized contemporary sculptor and the
recipient of numerous prestigious art awards. He is a member of the
Oneida Nation of Green Bay Turtle Clan, and the grandson of a
blacksmith.
Inspired by ancient Woodland petroglyphs and pictographs, his sculptures
are created in copper, as were many of the decorative and functional
items made by Native Americans in the Great Lakes region. His
sculptures are hand-cut, shaped, and welded and then given a patina
finish to enhance the copper’s natural aging process. Each piece has a
name tag written in the Oneida language and English, in addition to an
Oneida story, prayer, poem, or cultural statement.
