Scuppernong Marsh near Eagle 3/31/11

It was a beautiful spring day, sunny and just warm enough to take off your gloves. Some places still had snow but it was mostly gone. There were a few insects out but no biting ones. A lot of interesting things to paint: the old marl factory, springs, streams, white populars, light glinting off the grass, last year's puffy cattails....

Scuppernong has a very nice trail that was a railroad bed. From 1909-1915 a train hauled marl along this grade to the Eagle Lime Products Company warehouse located in Dousman. You can see remains of the old marl plant and marl pit. In addition there are springs where you can see water bubbling up out of the ground.

This is part of Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine State Forest and costs $7 for Wisconsin Residents unless you have a year pass. You have to go across the street and pay in Ottawa Park. There's a DNR pamphlet that tells you about Scuppernong. http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/wildlife_areas/scuppernong.htm
