Steve Horvath Demo 12/14/10

Steve Horvath is an accomplished watercolorist and pastelist. He likes painting landscapes. He is also a faculty member at MIAD. Right now he is teaching the foundation classes and has taught in Italy. He previously taught graphic design and typography.

He prefers to paint plein air but also works from photos. He probably shoots 500-1000 images per month. He does quick thumbnail sketches before starting to paint. He generally uses pastels (rembrandt soft and nupastel hard) on Canson Mis-Tientes paper when plein air painting and finishes it in the field in one morning session.

His watercolors follow a multi-step process: In the studio, he looks at images until he finds things that he likes. First ballpoint pen thumbnail sketches both horizontal and vertical format, then small watercolor sketches starting at about 2x3, then 4x6, then 5x7, etc. He'll lightly pencil sketch in horizon, water, trees, clouds before painting his color sketches. He keeps looking at everything he has done as he keeps increasing the size, the detail, the value contrast until he gets to the final picture at his ultimate size. He tests ideas as he goes along. He normally works dry although on his larger paintings he may work wet on wet for the sky.

He uses watercolor blocks where he has lightly sketched in a box or boxes to paint in. He uses both hot press and cold press paper. Cold press paper can indicate sky and water when the recesses are not filled in. He doesn't paint to the edges but does paint over the border. He also tests his colors in the border. He evaluates his color sketches paintings by setting a paper frame/mat over them. Currently his finished pieces are about 8x12. He works in fits and starts. When painting he works on several paintings at a time to allow them to dry and to come back with a fresh eye. He did use a small blow dryer in the demo. He holds the very end of the brush and tries to vary his movements so the marks are different.

He uses brushes from a #12 round down to a liner. At this demo he used a portable watercolor kit which he bought in Italy that he replenishes the colors as they are used. After each painting he cleans out the mixing wells so that he doesn't repeat the exact colors in each successive painting. He uses blacks to shade, grays to tone and white to tint. Blacks are not all the same color. He uses Winsor Newton and Grumbacher paints. Some of the colors he uses are lamp black, ivory black, davy gray, cerulean blue, prussian blue.

He paints on a flat surface. He works in areas, first the sky, then the bottom, then the trees allowing areas to dry before working over them.

Matting, framing and storing his watercolors:
  • He uses Bainbridge museum quality double thick mats which come with their own backboard that he buys at Utrecht.
  • He uses T-hinges on the back of the painting to attach it to the mat.
  • He doesn't attach the backboard to the mat.
  • He has several frames in various sizes that he uses over and over.
  • He does not use brown paper to seal the back of the painting. Instead he does the following: First the frame, then the glass, then the matt, then the painting, then the backboard, then corrugated plastic back board (which can be re-used), Everything is then sealed with plastic packaging tape.
  • He stores his matted but not framed paintings in archival boxes that he buys at Utrecht.
  • He records lightly in pencil on the back; title, when, where, personal comments, where exhibited (typically only exhibits a painting one time.)
  • His frames are gold frames which have been discontinued by Utrecht. He used to use metal frames but no longer does.
  • He doesn't frame his pastels. He uses a framer in the 3rd ward located on the 1st floor at Buffalo and Water Street. (Other framers mentioned by our members are Deyoung, Creative Enterprise)

Miniwaukan Park, Mukwonago 11/8

It was an extraordinary warm November day. Almost 70 and sunny with a light breeze. Very little humidity. A lot of kids skipping rocks, playing frisbee golf. Very friendly.

I've been told that in summer you can access the Mukwonago River here and walk down the gravel middle all the way to the canoe launch.

Milwaukee Sketch Club at BigBay Park, White Fish Bay 11/3

This is a beautiful park. Quite windy and chilly up on the bluff so we walked down to the beach where we sheltered from the wind.

This is probably the last Wednesday morning plein air outing until spring.

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Mukwonago Canoe Launch off Holz parkway 11/1

A bit chilly but sunny and pleasant.

Next Monday we are going to Miniwaukan park. Just keep heading north over the river from the canoe launch. Make a left onto Small Farm Road (first road after you go over the river on the bridge.) Make another left at the stop sign onto McKenzie Road.

Alice Wilson presents:

VIPER night!

Been searching for a unique drawing event, an alternative to academic figure
drawing and traditional open drawing sessions? Well, look no further!
Vintage Inspired Portrait & EntertainmentRoom or *VIPER* night is here!
What is *VIPER* night?

My intent is for VIPER to be a fun, funky, exciting, alternative to traditional academic figure drawing sessions. It's an opportunity for me to meld my love of all things vintage with my love of art, modeling, theatre, and music.
My ultimate goal for VIPER is for it to be held monthly at a different location. Starting out I may only be able to have it quarterly or once every 2-3 months. It really depends on the success of this first one and how
quickly I am able to find/book model(s), entertainment and a venue for the next. The premiere VIPER night will have a 1950's kitsch feel-perfect in time for Thanksgiving!
Award winning vocalist, Chanel le Meaux will be singing and local actress/art model, Sarah Fennig will be posing ala 1950's pin up style. The amazing bartenders at BYO will be crafting tasty cocktails-some of the best in town! There will likely be a drink special or two! I recommend the Strawberry Caparina. Please read below
for more details and I hope to see many of you on November 20th!

Sincerely,

Alice Wilson

**FAQ's** (Yes, I'm getting them already. :-)

Q: Do I have to arrive by 7:00?
A: Nope. Think of it as more like going to see a band. You can arrive and
leave whenever you wish.

Q: Will there be drawing horses?
A: Yes, but a limited number, probably 5 or 6 available on a first come
first serve basis. There are also lots of other seating options & lounging
spots at BYO. I want everyone to be able to mingle & move around the
space freely.

Q: What if I don't draw?
A: No worries! I don't either, umm not well anyway. You don't have to!
That's why there's entertainment. I want everyone to feel welcome & have

hang on the wall! :-)

Q: Can I draw Chanel?
A: Yes! Trust me, you'll want to! She wears really cool dresses & costumes!

Q: Will the model be nude?
A: No. Because of the nature of the event and it being open for everyone.
She will be in wonderful retro 50's outfits!

Q: How long will the poses be?
A: 5-20 minutes each

Q: What can I expect? What will it be like?
A: A party where lots of people are drawing and where an amazing singer is
singing. Expect to hear some Elvis when Chanel in taking a break. There will
always be someone to draw from. I plan to stagger Chanel and Sarah's breaks
so that they are aren't on break at the same time. 1950's kitsch. Hopefully
some indication of a 50's kitchen as a backdrop for the model. Did I mention
Elvis?

Q: How do I get tickets?
A: They are available at BYO and from me. They are $10. At the door they
will be $15.

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Calhoun Park Saturday 10/23

It was raining pretty good so we decided to stand under a pavilion to paint. Saw a lot of fall berries, interesting moss, a toad. There are two streams, a pond, a playground and various structures. On one end of the park is a farm and across the street is a nursery. At the junction of calhoun & beloit rd. I saw an old tiled silo. Fall colors were still pretty good.

Lincoln Parkway, Wed 10/20

There was a change of plans and we decided to paint at 54st & Lincoln Parkway (Just south of Hampton.) There was a brisk breeze today so we decided to climb down into the riverbed to paint. The river is quite low not like earlier this year when it was very high. You can still see a log stuck into the rusty metal walking bridge. No biting insects but just one lonely cricket, a kitty and ducks kept us company. Still quite a few fall flowers.

Next Wednesday, Oct 27, we plan to meet at 9:30am at Big Bay Park in Whitefish Bay just north of Hampton on N Lake Rd (Hwy 32).

Caran d'ache demo by Pat King, Tuesday 10/12

Pat King taught high school students for many years. After retirement she studied with Jean Crane a watercolor artist. Pat's primary medium is watercolor by itself and with Caran D'Ache.

She generally does Caran D'ache over watercolor paintings to intensify the color. She showed us drawing with the "crayons" then wetting them with a brush, picking up color from the crayons with a wet brush then applying it, mixing crayon shavings with water to make a paste which was then applied.

Here's a few links with info about her:
