About the Milwaukee Sketch Club

The Milwaukee Sketch Club meets every Tuesday evening (7:30 - 9:30pm) from the first part of September through May at St. Peters Episcopal Church at 80 st. and Lincoln Avenue in West Allis, Wisconsin.

On our weekly sketch nights we have two models; a portrait model and a nude model. We have a different nude model each week but the portrait model poses for two consecutive weeks. We ask that the portrait model wear the same clothing both weeks and the same hair style. Our nude model starts out with short five minute poses ending with a long half-hour pose at the end of the evening. The portrait model poses for half-hour at a time with a short break in between. We pay both models $25.00 per evening of modeling.

We welcome new members that are interested in painting and sketching. Artists can use any medium of their choice except for oils because of the solvent odor. If the artist uses a messy medium we ask that they bring a drop cloth or something to cover the chair they are using for supporting their materials and the floor beneath them. Our fees are $85.00 for the year. See the October 10, 2009 posting for our updated 2009 winter schedule.

We also have plein air during the summer with some hearty artists continuing into the colder months. They meet at different interesting areas each session. (See previous blog postings) The plein air is free.

Michael Foster Oil Portrait Demo at Milwaukee Sketch Club

Michael Foster, http://michaelfosteronline.com , is an oil portrait artist and teacher. He has a Masters of Art in Visual Studies from Cardinal Stritch University and has exhibited in several shows including solo shows at the University of Wis. Waukesha and the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center, Brookfield Wi. See his website for his work and current exhibitions.

He demonstrated a larger than life oil portrait at least 4' x 4' on a braced masonite panel, gessoed then wiped with burnt sienna. He worked from a black and white photo so he could visualize the color mood. He works with values, form, questions of form and chooses his own colors.

His first step was to rough in the locations of the face's features with charcoal. First getting the size and placement, Then working on the tilt and turn. He compares what is unknown to what is known, relates it to the whole. If something doesn't seem to be right, cover it with your hand and it will jump to the right place so you can correct it. He started by roughing in the top and middle of the head, then the chin. Then the middle vertical, tilt and shoulders. Then eyes, brows & nose, then eye width and nose width. Then hair & forehead.

He decided on a dominant complementary color scheme of purple and yellow, with a secondary complementary color pair of green and red. He started by blocking in the large dark shapes with purple, then put in the primary light source with yellow-green and the secondary light source with alizarin. Then colors were continually refined while remaining in the same color scheme. Areas were lightened with white and yellow.

He applied the paint directly from the tube to the painting. Colors were mixed directly on the painting. He used several bristle filbert brushes so didn't need to keep cleaning brush. He worked from large to small shapes. When correcting he paints right over the form, then once it's right he wipes out the error. He used the directional flow of the brush strokes to sculpt and carve out the forms.

He tries to get the entire painting as close to done in one sitting. Then lets it dry several days before reworking and glazing. If he doesn't like a particular area's texture he peels it off with a palette knife or sands it. He says when you paint a lot things happen faster.

He uses a very thin layer of retouch varnish applied with sponge brush on his paintings. It can be carefully wiped off with solvent and Viva paper towel if painting is dry before applying.

He takes his own photos using a canon sl and mostly one light source with a white card reflector. You can see his photos on his website that he built this summer using http://otherpeoplespixels.com/ that his friend Tom who is an abstract artist recommended.

All in all an excellent demo.

Juliane Rae Mueller critique at Milwaukee Sketch Club

Juliane Rae is a member of the AC Art Association, an interior designer, a teacher and an artist. She has taught at a lot of places including the Milwaukee Art Museum, MATC and Australia. She also gives private art lessons.

I could only find 2 posts about her on the web, in the UWM post advertising her Fen Shui class, http://uwmpost.com/article/50/19/908-Post-Magazine- and in book rags, http://www.bookrags.com/highbeam/home-front-feng-shui-lesson-19990620-hb/ .

Great critique and very interesting pieces from our members, 2 large pastel portraits, 3 sculptures, large city abstract, pastel vegetable still life, too name a few.

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Lion's Gorge near Grafton

Lion's Gorge is beautiful and well worth the 40' drive. The trails are well maintained. This park is geared towards hikers so be prepared to walk. It's semi-rustic with no fee, portapotties but no running water, so bring water. The bluff had fingers going into Lake Michigan and there was a platform over a swampy area where the greens were just incredible. There's also a beach. Perfect day and weather. Leaves just starting to turn.

To get there, take Hwy 43 to exit 92 (Grafton Hwy 60 W & Hwy Q E), then go east on Hwy Q over the railroad tracks to the first stop sign which is Hwy C/Lakeshore Rd. Make a Left. Start looking for a small brown sign labeled Lion's Gorge. It's approximately the 2nd road. Make a right and follow the signs.

A hiker suggested we ought to go to Menomonee Park in Menomonee Falls just north of Townline & Good Hope Rd. They have a fishing pier and a path around the quarry. The firefighters go there to train too.

This weeks upcoming, loosely scheduled, Plein Air Outings:
  • 9/23 (Tue) Hoyt Park 1800 N Swan Blvd Wauwatosa (N) http://www.friendsofhoytpark.org

  • 9/26 (Sat) Downtown Bayview, near out of business Omega Burger stand. Aproximately KK & bay st. (E) or could go to Retzer Nature Center, http://friendsofretzer.org/09/ in Waukesha?

We were at the northern border of the LMA Plein Air Collaboration downtown painting competion border so I got to see some people that I haven't seen all summer. Bathroom was closed.

This Saturday is Lion's Gorge.
Next Tuesday is Hoyt Park.

There are bridges, interesting industrial buildings, beautiful plants, downtown city skyline, plus the museum itself with a lot of interesting reflections and motorcycles of course. A very large piece of land, lots of parking and easy to get to. Today was very sunny with a light breeze. We painted on the south side next to one of the rivers.

This Saturday 9/12 is the New Berlin Farmer's Market, near Moreland Ave & National Ave.

Is anyone interested in doing a Plein Air Outing in Villa Terrace Museum?

Hello All,

While we were doing the Plein Air outing Wednesday in the Villa Terrace neighborhood we walked passed the Villa Terrace Museum. While looking in at their courtyard we started talking about having an outing for all of us on the premises, outside at the museum.

Today I was in contact with their events planner, Judith. Here is the scoop. There is a cost of $3-4 depending on if it is during hours or not. Open hours are Wed-Sat 1-5pm, Sunday thru Sept. 10-5. In September during the week would be best per their schedule and she would need a two week notice so she can schedule the time.

The only Sunday (or Saturday) morning available in September would be September 13th, but we would have to let her know very soon.

The address of the Villa Terrace Museum, http://www.cavtmuseums.org/vt/home.html , is 2220 N. Terrace Ave., about 3-4 blocks south of St. Mary's and North Point Tower.

Is anyone interested in doing this Plein Air outing during the week in September on a ,
  • Wednesday or Thursday 1-3pm or on
  • September 13th, Sunday morning 10-Noon, a 2-3 hour hour outing.
Please email me your thoughts ASAP!

I would need an RSVP ASAP or at least by next week Tuesday, August 25. As soon as I have at least 4-5 people on a particular day I will send out an email saying we are doing it that day

msc1922@gmail.com

FYI - They would prefer us not to use the oil medium on their premises and this outing would have to be strictly outside.

Milwaukee Sketch Club at BackBay Park in Villa Terrace neighborhood

It was a beautiful day on Wednesday morning. We walked around the neighborhood and decided to paint in Back Bay Park which overlooks the Milwaukee Lakefront. We could see boats sailing in Lake Michigan and yachts in McKinley Marina. In addition, the houses surrounded the park were very interesting.

Milwaukee Sketch Club in Downtown Greendale

The weather was perfect. Several people painted near the gazebo, some people took the path from the park that went behind the houses, one person painted on his car on the street in a neighborhood. Also there was the clock tower, a stream running with rocks running underneath the bridges... Lots of neat areas to paint.

Some more suggestions for Plein Air Outings: Veterans Park, Scout Lake off of Loomis, Crystal Ridge, Holy Hill.

If anyone has some other places they'd like to sketch and paint, just email msc1922@gmail.com
