Mel Tess 1926 - 2016

From: Thomas Piedt <piedt1@yahoo.com>

Subject: Sad News

Morning everyone

Joyce  informed me Mel Tess has passed away.

Joyce had been contacted by Arline Flores. Arlene  said she had brought Joe to sketch on Tuesday night; however, Joe was so worried  about Mel he  asked Arline to stop by Mel's on the way to check on him.  There was no answer and Joe at some point contacted Mel's daughter.

I'm not sure  if Mel was in the hospital at the time Arline and Joe stopped by or had passed away at home.

Mel  has been a cherished member of the sketch club for many years and  will be missed  by all.

Last Demo night on Tuesday, I was bored(blocked view), and looked to sketch someone interesting.   Mel!!!  What made me draw you?   Look how alive and attentive Mel is.    Still learning and inspiring us.

I know you are happy with your son in the non-physical.  God bless.

Jeanne Nikolai Olivieri & KJ Prodigy Collaborate on Gallery Night! April 15 5-9pm

From: Jeanne Nikolai Olivieri <jnoart@gmail.com>

J Nikolai Art, The Marshall Building, 207 E. Buffalo St., Suite 602

Dear Art Friends,

April Gallery Night 2016 will be a special occasion at J Nikolai Art! I am excited to collaborate with poet Kavon Cortez Jones, aka KJ Prodigy, who will perform his anthology, illustrated by me, in public for the first time. Join us at a reception on Gallery Night, Friday, April 15 from 5-9pmKJ will perform the anthology and two other pieces at 7:00pm. See the colorful interpretation of KJ's words, created by yours truly.

KJ Prodigy performs his works with energy and character. He is highly expressive and creative, seeking to surprise and engage audiences. KJ states: “I am (a) Harambee-Milwaukee home-grown performance artist of avant-garde poetry.”

My newest paintings will be exhibited as well. I am a Milwaukee artist, working in watercolor, acrylics and mixed media. My current body of work, Cabled Together, focuses on the frequently overlooked power lines, cables and wires that support us, divide our space and change our landscape.

My studio also features ceramics by Randall Becker, an established, nationally known and highly regarded ceramic artist from Mazomanie, WI.

Hope to see you on Friday night or on Saturday, Gallery Day, open 10-4:00!

Cheers,

Jeanne

***Please note! My classroom studio has moved to 1407 N. 54th St. Milwaukee 53208 (54th and Vliet St. northwest corner)

After teaching in the same studio for sixteen years, developers have finally reached my Walker's Point studio building and the tenants have been told to vacate. The building was a great creative community in it's heyday as a home to five floors of working artist studios over the last thirty years.

My new teaching studio and exhibiting gallery will be located in a street level boutique storefront in a lovely arts and crafts building in the vibrant Washington Heights neighborhood.

I hope you can join us!

Plein Air MKE, May 7-14

from: pleinaircollector.com

Milwaukee Museums Band Together, Host Plein Air Event

Editor, PleinAir Today

Five museums in Milwaukee have joined forces to draw visitors to a two-mile stretch of cityscape featuring diverse subject matter. It’s called Plein Air MKE, and it’s scheduled for May 7-14.

The participating museums are along a mile-long stretch of Milwaukee’s lakefront and consist of the Charles Allis Art Museum, the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, North Point Lighthouse, the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum, and Saint John’s on the Lake, a retirement home with an outpost of the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend. Painters in the event will be asked to paint in that area, which contains bucolic scenes, dramatic vistas incorporating Lake Michigan, historic buildings, an Olmsted park system, and other landmarks — plus the bustle of city life. Best of Show earns an artist $2,000, and more than $2,000 in other awards will be given. Pamela Ruschman will serve as a judge. There’s a Quick Draw planned on Milwaukee’s famous Brady Street. A portion of sales will go to the five museums hosting the event.

John Sterr, executive director of the Charles Allis & Villa Terrace Art Museums, says it only makes sense for the five institutions to band together for initiatives in the current climate surrounding arts and cultural organizations. “These are challenging times for small and medium-sized arts organizations,” says Sterr. “The more we can work together to bring people to the Miracle Mile of museums, the better. Each museum stands on its own, for sure, but the effort of the smaller organizations on the historic East Side of Milwaukee to pool our resources and brand a part of the city is unique.”

Sterr says that the group hopes to make Plein Air MKE an annual event, but first they must get one edition under their belt. “We will learn a lot our first time out,” he says. “Taking on anything of this magnitude, you learn a lot in the trenches. Certainly, one of the things that we want is to build up our sponsor base for the event. We’re starting to do that.”

The event is limited to 75 artists. For more information, view the prospectus here.
