Obituary for Marie A. Weis (past president's wife)

From: Joyce Eesley

Hi fellow MSC members,

I have attached the JSOnline obituary for our former president's (Bob Weis) wife.  Marie was a model for us some years ago.  I have been in touch with Bob's granddaughter, Leah, who also modeled for us.  Leah said that Marie has been in poor health for some time but no matter the age or health she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Hope everyone is enjoying summer.  Great weather that has been a long time coming.  Hope to see some of you doing plein air painting this summer.

Joyce Eesley

Costumed Model, Bayview Art in the Park 6/21; 7/12/19/26; 8/2,9

From: rockinredhead <rockinredhead52@gmail.com>

Subject: Draw a costumed model at Bayview Art in the Park!

Last Sat June 14th I modeled dressed as a Geisha at Zillman Park during Bayview Art in the Park. The artists who came loved it and a few families even had children who stopped & drew for a bit or took photos with me. Brian Breider, the organizer of the event has decided to let me do this all of the Saturdays that I was originally just going to be a vendor.

I will be back this Sat June 21st from 11am-3pm and the following dates as well:

       July 12, 19, 26
       August 2 & 9

This Sat I will likely be dressed as a fairy similar to the top photo. The second one is from when I posed at Ink Spot Tattoo during Bayview Gallery Night. The bottom photo is from last Saturday. I will be in a different costume & have a different set up/theme each week! There will be a tip basket out if you wish to show your appreciate. :-) Please tell your artist friends! I am also looking to do this at events throughout the Summer so if anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Creatively yours,

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Colectivo Coffee on Lakefront 5:30pm on 6/17/14

10 of us showed up. The weather was perfect, sunny with a slight breeze and the lakefront flies that like to bite your ankles didn't come out till dusk (about 7:30pm).

However, it was quite busy and noisy at the lakefront. People were walking exercising, rush hour traffic was passing. Colectivo had seating both outside at the tables and on the grass. Plenty of parking across the street.

Exit to lakefront was closed so had to get off on a different ramp which was really backed up. Traffic was crazy!

Lakefront is probably a little quieter on weekday mornings when we used to go paint.

Next week is VA at 5000 W. National Ave.

East Troy Electric Railroad substation

This tourist electric railroad http://www.easttroyrr.org/ is operated and run by volunteers, so if you're looking to drive a train or help out.... The people are real friendly. The engineer moved a car out for us to paint before they started running at 10am. According to their website you can ride as long as you like with one ticket.

Sunny, windy, felt coolish. Lost of interesting shadows and reflections in the glass of the icecream shop. 3 of us showed up and then decided 2 blocks down the track from the railroad museum to the giant garage where the working cars are stored.

Thank you John for the pictures!

Online and Gallery Exhibit Opening

Dear Milwaukee Sketch,

Earlier this evening, Awards Juror Molly Johnson was pleased to announce her selections for awards in the Richeson75 Landscape, Seascape and Architectural Competition. Her comments precede the images of the winners below.

Ms Johnson is the Executive Director and owner of The Academy of Fine Art, Wisconsin's only Art Renewal Center approved academy. She is a graduate of The American Academy of Art and The Academy of Fine Art. Her extensive education includes architectural rendering, watercolor, figurative, still life and portrait study in graphite, ink, charcoal, oil and watercolor. Molly's work has been shown in many national and international exhibitions along with solo and group exhibitions throughout the state of Wisconsin. Johnson has been a professional artist for over 25 years and an art instructor for all grade levels through adults.
The Academy of Fine Art and Molly's personal studio are located in Denmark, Wisconsin within the historical 1909 Flour Mill that she and her husband Brian have renovated into a creative space welcoming artists of all levels. Please visit her work at www.mollyjohnsonstudio.com, and The Academy at  www.theacademyoffineart.com

1st Place Oils and Acrylic ($1000 certificate for Richeson art materials)
Vince Natale, "Brooklyn Bridge Opening Ceremonies, 1883"

One of the many things that I found so wonderful about this piece is the strong architectural presence of the bridge and surrounding buildings, they are skillfully replicated in this night scene. Another is the radiance of the fireworks and lamp light to highlight the focal point; it is extremely effective and festive. Vince's painting is an enjoyable glimpse into the past.

2nd Place Oils and Acrylic ($500 certificate for Richeson art materials)
Lisa Larrabee, "Westward Moon"
That beautiful moon looming over the last glow of the evening sun on the trees and soft light on the grasses is stunning.  I felt a sense of serenity standing in front of it, dreaming of evenings chasing fireflies. Lisa has a gifted ability to capture the subtleties of nature and atmosphere making it easy for the viewer to enter her paintings with their own memories.

1st Place Other Media ($1000 certificate for Richeson art materials)
Antonio Masi, "Morning Work"
Antonio's color palette brings out the coolness of being under the steel girder bridge and the pattern of the white light of daytime launches us down the road in motion. His use of watercolor and exquisite edge work give this painting movement and authenticity placing us right into a yellow taxi zooming below this bridge.

2nd Place Other Media ($500 certificate for Richeson art materials)
Joyce Hanson, "Citadel"
The intriguing subject matter was beautifully captured in Pastel. There is a wonderful sense of life and movement in this almost abstract painting. The colors are rich and delicious and add to the overall magnificence of this "Citadel."
Three paintings were also selected for Honorable Mention by Ms Johnson: They are:
Sharon Way Howard, Follow the Leader, Oil
Diane Fechenbach, Desert Sculpture, Watercolor
Charles Peer, A Beautiful Ending, Pastel

And last but not least, Best in Show with an award or $5,000 cash goes to
Ming Feng, "Sunday Sailing"
The captured light and use of color make this sailing scene romantic and classical and definitely stopped me in my tracks as I first came upon it. Ming's strong fundamental knowledge and training is evident in his use of composition, color, value and beautifully placed brush strokes. I found myself returning to it repeatedly and enjoying it more each time.

 Congratulations to all the winners!

Terry
