In this all day workshop we will explore using direct painting and drawing methods to rapidly create accurate and vital portraits working from a live model. Students may choose create their artwork in oils or acrylics, pastels or charcoal. All experience levels are welcome.

We will cover the process step by step, beginning with the quick establishment of a foundation of accurate proportions and key anchor points. We will then proceed piece by piece, seeing and painting the nuanced qualities of value and edge in the interlocking mosaic of shapes that build the forms that create an accurate likeness of the model. Seeing and mixing colors for skin tones, hair, and clothing will be covered in detail for those working in paint or pastels.

Entry Deadline 8/18/14
Entry Deadline 12/5/14

Dear Milwaukee Sketch,

We are pleased to announce the opening of the Richeson75Online Still Life and Floral 2014 Exhibit.  Our Awards Juror, Ms. Elizabeth Robbins has made her selections. She has sent the following Juror's Statement:

"There were so many great paintings and want to congratulate all of you for making the top 75.

As a judge I first look at all the images as a thumbnail. If the images have an interesting composition and reads well as a thumbnail then it should read well as a large painting.

After I look at them as a thumbnail, I look for harmony, variety of edges, a overall good handling of the paint and emotion. If a painting draws me in and makes me keep looking, then for me that ways heavily on my decision. "

The judge's comments about why she selected each precede the images. Thanks to Liz and congratulations to all the winners!

Juror's Honorable Mentions (2)
"Viewing this as a thumbnail I was immediately drawn to it. Upon closer examination I loved the paint quality about this one. Loved the harmony of the reds with the warm greens. I'm not quite sure what the white object at the top is (maybe a plate?) but I don't care. Love the touch of soft blue greens and lavender in it. It verges on an abstract."

"Loved the painting quality. The lights are thick and juicy. Having a collection of blue and white myself, I was taken with this painting. Loved how the vase and the main yellow daisy are taken to a more finished step while the other lowers are more abstract. If everything it taken to a finished step then there is nothing left to the imagination. "

3rd Place:
"Wonderful color harmony. I loved how the chrysanthemums are definitely the focal point. The little book and vase are subordinate to the flowers. There is no confusing where to look in this painting. Wonderful edges."

2nd Place:
"Loved this pastel. It's an ordinary subject matter but the way it's cropped is very nice. I loved the temperature changes in this one. The warm light with the cool shadows are wonderful. The one lost edge at the upper left makes me come into the painting and want to keep following the line to the two main petunias. Love how the focal point is resolved while other petunias are just abstract shapes but you know they are petunias.
As a flower lover, this pastel made me smile."

First Place:
"Wow, Again, as a thumbnail I was immediately drawn to this painting. I have to admit that the subject matter and even the name made me a bit uncomfortable but for that reason I kept looking again and again. The harmony in the painting is wonderful. Again, the background is less resolved than the skull which makes the skull the important item in the painting. The negative shapes caused by the cast shadows are very interesting. I tune into negative shapes sometimes even more than positive shapes and these were great."

Best In Show:
"This painting read really well as a thumbnail. There is more negative space than positive which makes the elements in the painting have more impact. The is an unbalance of light and dark which is important. If you have the same amount of Light vs. Dark then painting becomes boring. The whole concept is fabulous. What an unexpected collection of things together to paint. I loved the unfinished quality of the background yet the elements were taken to a higher degree of finish. Well done!"

I am happy to tell you that the charity ebook ‘Wildlife Art and Photography’ continues to sell on Amazon, raising much needed funds for the Deer rescue centre.
I would also like to thank Gary Jones for running the ‘Art of Photography’ group, take a look there to see how talented many of our photography members are!
Ebooks are a great way to support the site, and promote and share your work. To this end, my Son Dean is planning a book to showcase our photographers from PMP, in all genres.Go to his discussion to find out more.

All the royalties will go to The South West Deer Sanctuary and Study Centre based in Somerset, UK, to help them continue their worthy work - you can read more about the book in the magazine.
The book is composed of work provided by our keen wildlife photographers and artists on PMP.  This book is a fabulous showcase of wildlife art and photography from around the world. Not only that, the artists and photographers generously reveal their thought processes and techniques used in the creative process.  As a bonus, there are also two full step-by-step watercolor painting demonstrations by artist, Maria Balcells.

Subject: Calling Wildlife Supporters and Artists!

I love to support our members who take action; especially when this action is to help others or a good cause. Many of you will know Cheryl Neilson, a very active member, and leader of the detailed watercolor group. She recently contacted me about a project she is undertaking to raise funds for BSPCA, Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Cheryl is a resident of Bahrain, and volunteers at their new centre.
She wants to use wildlife art images to create a 2015 Calender, as well as other creative ideas, head over to the discussion on PMP to find out more.

"Is it Spring yet? Will this winter ever end?"  I hear that wherever I go, even within the pages of PMP! These dreary days of winter have been going on far too long....it's time for a change from drab.... to Fab!!! From cloistered grey, to energized, non-stop color!!  Let's transform this long, dull season with glorious hues that will chase our winter blues away!!
Hello!!! This month we will be painting strictly from black and white photos chosen for your reference from our PMP gallery. However....you will be painting those black and white photos....in bright, cheerful colors to brighten up these long, grey and dreary days of winter!!   The challenge is to plan your color palette and values well, so your painting takes the viewer from monotone, to magnificent!!!
Finished paintings will be judged on the use of color strategy, strong values, and creativity, so make  your painting something out of the ordinary, a jaw-dropping, eye-stopping piece that makes everyone forget these long winter days as soon as they see it!!
Stop by soon, and check it out....we'll be happy to see you!!!!   http://paintmyphoto.ning.com/forum/topics/march-2014-color-your-world
