Pulse Picks: The Healing Power of Art by Dawn Patel

Victim No More, Silent No More
The Healing Power of Art
By Dawn Patel, local artist and owner of Brilliant Stranger

This is the story of the birth of a painting, but it is much more. It is the story of life events that nearly destroyed me. I was not destroyed, but these events followed me. I moved from place to place, but they were never far behind. I tried therapy, but they returned in the night. I grew strong and confident, but they lingered in the corners of my world waiting for a weak moment to pounce. I built a life for myself, but they built a wall around that life, keeping my fears in and real intimacy out. This is the story of domestic abuse, abuse from an intimate partner. One of the most insidious and terrifying forms of violence, it is one of the most common. And it is a story of a painting that has been my way of breaking down my walls, the real and the imagined.

Subject: Hey anita

Im turning to the seasoned vet for some help.
Im hoping you can email any and all your artist friends to see if they are interested in being a full season vendor.  Its not the money we need,  we need dedicated artists.

This type of weekly event I need to have at least a handful of artists that are going to be there most of the season so i dont have an empty event. We have a good number of artists (20 so far)  signed up already but its mostly at the daily level.

I only really need 4 more FULL TIME vendors to guarantee we can have the fest. otherwise i will need to cancel.

If you wouldn't mind passing this message on to your contacts, I  would forever be grateful.
I only need 4!
thanks so much.

Pulse Picks: Recognizing Wealth of Women Artists by Sally Slattery

Recognizing Wealth of Women Artists
By Sally Slattery

Door County boasts a thriving visual arts scene - potters, painters, photographers and everything in between. I believe that I interview just as many female artists as I do male artists here in Door County - but gender bias in the visual arts world still exists.

Check out this article from truth-out.org, "Women Artists Still Face Discrimination," by Eleanor J. Bader. She writes, "A 2011 Guerrilla Girls survey investigated New York museums and found just four percent of the artists in the Metropolitan Museum's contemporary section were female. MOMA and the Guggenheim fared somewhat better, with 26 and 23 percent respectively.

"What's more, it's not only a New York phenomenon. In fact, the National Museum of Women in the Arts estimates that five percent of art currently on display in US museums was made by women. From the newly opened Broad Contemporary Art Museum in Los Angeles - where 87 percent of the work was created by men - to the National Gallery of Art and the Hirshhorn in Washington, DC, the story is identical."

I am pleased and proud, in recognition of Women's History Month, to highlight just a few of the many Door County female artists I've had the great opportunity to profile in the pages of the Pulse.

* Paper cut artist Martha Aurelius. * Fiber artist Lynn Schuster. * Fashion designer and artist Dawn Patel. * Watercolor artist Beverly Hart Branson. * Photographer Rachel Slepekis. * Painter Bonnie Seaquist. * Glass artist Deanna Clayton.
* Jewelry artist Angela Lensch. * Silversmith Sylvia Youell. * Assemblage artist Renee Hilgers.

Fred Bell Classes

From: Frederick Bell <fred@fredbellpaintings.com>
3/12/14
Hi former students,

I have two openings in my Friday morning painting classes.  These classes are limited to six students and permit me to spend more one on one time with you.  Students mostly bring in their own assignments, (photos,) and I help them with translating it into a painting.  Sometimes students need an assignment and I give them one.

Time:  9:30 - 11:30am

Price:  $60. for four classes.  This gives you entry into four classes.   You don't need to come each week.  When you attend, I mark it down, until all four are used up.

Place:  Fred's Studio, 6133 W. Appleton Ave, Milwaukee, WI  53210,   414-447-6366

Materials:  Oil or acrylic paint

These classes are presented in a congenial, friendly atmosphere.  Bring in the work you are struggling with or start from the beginning and learn how to paint.  Instruction is directed toward developing your own style of painting, "finding your voice."  If you have any questions, please email fred@fredbellpaintings.com or call 414-447-6366

The father of St. Peter's informed me just before sketch the church is having a dinner downstairs  next Tuesday, and will not be available for sketch. I didn't explore whether the upstairs will be available next Tuesday, and even If it is the place may possibly be parked up.  I'm not sure what we can do given the short notice - we may have to cancel for Tuesday. I've emailed Art regarding the situation, and will include him on this email as well.

Art is currently in Florida and won't be back until Sunday, and I'll be out of touch since I'm leaving for Florida in the am - I will not be back until Wednesday March 5th. I'll check my email when I can but the only  access to email I'll have is via Hotel accommodations - I don't have a black berry or an I pad.

Art and I will touch base and get back to the members. There are a few members  who don't have email so if you know someone  please give them a call and  keep them  informed. - it would be appreciated. I have a limited cell phone service: T- Mobil.

Thanks for your patience - Tom
