Painted Turtles at Portage Art Center

From: Margo Wolfe <wolfe0472@gmail.com>

Hello all,
I just thought I would let you know that I will be showing my Painted Turtles again but at our local Portage art center.  Here is the poster that made me enter it.  There isn't any judging or awards.  It is just an event they put together ever year for local artists, poets and floral artists.  It should be fun.

I am just starting to get back into doing some watercolors.  Did one tiny one.  I mean mini 2" x 3" of another iris.  I donated this little one to the local Women's Civic League for their monthly raffle they have at their luncheons.  It felt good.  It has been too long.  I am planning another one the size of the turtles, at least, 18x24" of Mallards swimming in a pond over winter.  Now that I told you I will have to do it, right.  ;-)

Stay warm.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Margo

The Impressionist Vision: American Impressionism

from: jwhempel@hotmail.com

The Impressionist Vision: American Impressionism

An All- Day Painting Workshop

In the late 19th century a number of American painters adopted the style and working methods of the French Impressionists, revolutionary in its bright sketchy brushwork as well as unconventional compositions and every day subject matter. Working both at home and abroad, these American artists created an astonishing range of truly inspired works from sun splashed seasonal landscapes and vigorous bustling cityscapes to tranquil intimate domestic scenes..

Paint along with James as we explore in depth some seminal works from key artists of the movement to discover the process and procedures used to create paintings alive with a variety of atmospheric effects of color, light, and space.

We have had a great time at our past all-day intensive painting workshops,
(A little art history-A lot of painting)
I hope you will be able to join us this time!

When:   2 Sessions: Sunday February 23rd

Beyond The Color Wheel: Common Sense Color Mixing & Color Theory For Painters

from: James Hempel jwhempel@hotmail.com

Beyond The Color Wheel:
Common Sense Color Mixing & Color Theory For Painters

The ability to see and mix accurate colors is an essential skill for the painter. Much of the popularly dispensed "color theory" for artists organizes and presents the world of color in an often confusing and oversimplified way. Basic color wheels and ambiguous terms and language often do not match up with practical concerns of the painter who is trying capture the vital world of what is seen by the limited means of tubes of colored pigments.

In this all day workshop we will consider the large topic of color for the painter with particular focus on how to see and mix any color in terms of the three basic dimensions: Hue, Value, and Chroma. The organization of a basic range of colors on a working palette will be detailed using the Munsell Color System, then put to use in a wide range of color mixing exercises and studies. The advantages and disadvantages of various limited palette strategies will also be examined.

An introductory discussion will cover the biology of how we see and perceive light and color. We will also survey the use and range of paint colors and pigments used by painters throughout art history, with special attention paid to the various "Old Masters", The Impressionists, and the innovations in modern pigments in the 20th century.

When: (2 sessions)
Friday, November 30th  10:00 am - 4:00pm (with a 1/2 hr break for lunch) orFriday, December 14th
10:00 am - 4:00pm (with a 1/2 hr break for lunch)

1/23/14
Well Hello friends,
it has been some time since I sent out a message to all members with news and updates. I am hoping to do this on a Monthly basis.
We recently hit another milestone on PMP, we now have over 10K Members, and the growth continues. The challenge is to maintain the feel of the site. Many people have made real friends here in a supportive environment. Rest assured myself and the admin team are ‘on the same page’ where that is concerned. The PMP ‘difference ‘ is that we are completely independent. How the site develops is largely in the hands of members, in collaboration with the admin team. For example, groups still remain a major feature for many people, as do the challenges. Some of you may be wondering about the site upgrade that has been talked about. It will happen, but Ning (Our solution provider) perhaps jumped the gun when they announced it. The process to migrate from version 2 to version 3 is still being worked on. So I have no timescale for this as yet.
Going forward we will be featuring books and products made by members, either independently or in partnership with PMP. Many of you will know I recently published my own ebook ‘introduction to loose watercolor’ on Amazon for kindle. If you want to read more about my plans and ideas for ebooks, take a look at my article in Issue 8 of the PMP newsletter

Today I am delighted to introduce you to a new book on watercolor painting by Maria Balcells. It is entitled ‘Watercolor Drops’ and if you follow the link you can get a 30% discount that Maria has put in place, particularly for PMP members, for a time. Use the code JLNMQXE9O8. Also there are additional discount options for sharing Maria’s page. I highly recommend this book I am still referring to it myself, always so much to learn from each other!
It just remains for me to wish you all a happy, and creative, New Year.
Roy Simmons
 PMP owner/founder.

Charcoal can be used in many different and often expressive ways. In this class we will study drawing with a focus on charcoal and how it̢۪s different uses. Beginners welcome.

Reminder: Friday Portrait Drawing in Charcoal - A Common Sense Approach

from: jwhempel@hotmail.com

Just a reminder about this Friday's portrait workshop. I have a few spaces left if anyone's interested in joining us!
Next in my series of daylong workshops is one suitable for all levels: from beginners to the advanced artist. Whether you're looking for an introduction to the dynamic range and possibilties of charcoal portraits, or are ready to brush up and sharpen your seeing and drawing skills, this popular "famous faces" workshop is a perfect way to get into the studio and re-energize your creative process.

Portrait Drawing in Charcoal - A Common Sense Approach

We'll explore fundamentals of the portrait drawing process, this time using classic celebrity icons Jimmy Stewart, Audrey Hepburn & Grace Kelly as models.
We'll cover the portrait drawing process step by step, beginning with the quick establishment of a foundation of accurate proportions and key anchor points. We'll then proceed piece by piece, seeing and drawing the nuanced qualities of tone and edge to build an interlocking mosaic of shapes to create a vital likeness.

When: Friday, Feb. 7th,  10:00 am - 4:00pm (with a 1/2 hr break for lunch)

Where: James Hempel Fine Arts

Class fee: $60
