Door County Arts Mean Business by Dave Maier

"Must be a pretty cushy gig in the winter, eh?" I've given up trying to convince folks I'm not the Maytag Repair Man of the nonprofit world come November. Truth is, during the performance season, it's all routine and reaction and putting out fires.
Administratively speaking, winter is our creative season - full of planning (short and long term), marketing, scheduling, designing, grant writing, fundraising, lobbying and "sharpening the saw," so to speak. The off-season is the only time we have to really connect with other arts professionals to learn and bring home the latest best practices for running the place. And we also work to keep AFT and what we do in the public eye. You caught me on my soapbox this month.

Tina Quigley (executive director of Mosaic Arts in Green Bay) and I were recently invited by Arts Wisconsin to give testimony together in support of increased funding for the arts to the Joint Finance Committee in reaction to the proposed 2013-2015 budget for the State of Wisconsin. Here are some excerpts.

Wisconsin is home to 12,953 arts-related businesses that employ 49,526 people with full-time jobs. These organizations comprise a $535 million annual industry, providing nearly $65 million in local and state tax revenues. These businesses play an important role in building and sustaining economic vitality in our communities.

And yet, Wisconsin ranks 46th in the nation in per-capita funding for the arts - behind Alabama and Mississippi. Our neighbor to the northwest, Minnesota, ranks #1.

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Mukwonago Red Schoolhouse 9/16/13

It was a perfect day. Sunny with a breeze and no biting insects. Thought about repeating it the following Thursday but now it looks like the weather will not cooperate.

John, Thank you for the pictures!

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Red School House and Expresso Love Coffee in Mukwonago 5/9/13

Well, we started out at the Red School House at the corner of Section Rd, Beulah Rd and CTH EE next to the fire station. It was very overcast and started to drizzle about 1 hour after we got there, so we picked up our things and drove over the Expresso Love Coffee  on Hwy 83 and Hwy ES near the Red Brick House Museum.

We parked in back of Express Love Coffee then after buying some coffee sat outside in front under the awning and umbrella at the tables. Hwy 83 is quite a busy street with a lot of traffic. However, the buildings were very interesting. (Thank you John for pictures!)

This week Thursday, we plan to try the school house again. It supposed to be nice tomorrow.

Milwaukee Sketch Club Plein Air Painting Thursday 9am May 8 at Red School House or Expresso Love Coffee, Mukwonago

Hi, Last Thursday we ended up at Mayfair Mall food court. Best to park near Crate and Barrel in order to enter the door with the escalator going directly up to the food court. Only subway is open at 9am to get coffee and cookies. A lot of people picking up sandwiches there.

Architecture is interesting to paint. The people are more difficult as they move around a lot. Much more than people do in coffee houses. There was some groups of people meeting but they didn't stay as long as the groups who meet at Brookfield Square in the morning.

However there was a display of "Sweet Delights" candy in machines that was colorful and interesting.

If the weather cooperates we are planning to go to Red School House in Mukwonago.

Here's directions to Red School House.

Red School House on the property of the Town Of Mukwonago Town Hall, W320 S8315 Beulah Road.  From Pick N Save in Mukwonago, turn West onto HY NN.  Turn right (2nd stoplight) at Hy EE.  It is on the corner of Beulah Road, Hy EE, and Section Road.  You will see the  Red School House as you come around the corner from Lauren Park.

However if we wimp out due to the weather forecast, our back up plan is to go to Expresso Love Coffee http://www.espressolovecoffee.com/Espresso_Love_Coffee/Espresso_Love_Coffee.html

As always please contact us if you would like to meet up as our location can be flexible.

Plymouth Festival of Fine Arts, Saturday June 29, 2013, 10am - 4pm

from: WIPAPA mricl4hlth@aol.com

We have extended our Arts Festival deadline to "when full." The date of our juried arts fest is Saturday, June 29. Could you please help us get the word out? Perhaps some of your fellow artists might be interested. Our website has the info: www. plymoutharts.org and we have teamed up with the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, to do the festival. The chamber won a State of Wisconsin JEM grant for $29,000 to promote our Mural and Fine Arts Festival. I'm sure you are familiar with these, but the grants are strictly for promotion outside of Sheboygan County. So therefore they are promoting the fest all over the Midwest. We truly hope to have great turn out!
