  Tips:

Open Paint Day Feb. 24th Wisconsin Automotive Museum

WIPAPA: Wisconsin Plein Aire Painters Association

 

Great News!!! The Wisconsin Automotive Museum in Hartford (http://wisconsinautomuseum.com/) will once again open it's doors for our February open paint day  Saturday Feb 23rd. For those of you who joined us last year this was a really fun day. This museum is a hidden gem! Thank you Gail Franke for making these arraignments and for donating a painting to them in lew of admission for all of us!!! 
 
 
 
Here's the scoop:
 
Doors do not open till 10 am and we can then paint till close (5pm) if you wish! If you prefer to paint outdoors you may!! 
 
You must use a DROP CLOTH! We need to protect their floors! 
 
We will take a lunch break at 1:00 (bring your own lunch) in the lobby and we will critique at that time! 
 
The Museum is located in the same building as the Schauer Center for the Arts at 147 Rural St. just off Hwy 60 in Downtown Hartford

Sacramento Artists Persuade Farmer
Twenty-one members of the Sacramento (California) Plein Air Painters and Sacramento Sketchers recently worked on a farm after persuading the 95-year-old property owner to let them paint on his land. Two children of one of the group's members also joined the paint-out. [read more]


  Tips: 

  This is the still life painting LaChance decided was a "stinker." He reused the panel to paint a winter landscape.

 Living in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, requires an outdoor painter to get used to working in deep snow, strong winds, and cold temperatures. Todd LaChance can handle all that, as well as the inevitable failures -- the paintings he calls "stinkers." He recently salvaged one of those stinkers and shares his triumph with us here. “Drawing the Town: Works by Marcia Milner-Brage" is on display through March 31 at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls, IA (USA).

Over the past 2 1/2 years, Marcia - a member of USK Midwest - has drawn more than 200 scenes (like the one at left) in and around Cedar Falls and Waterloo with approximately 36 framed pieces in the show.

USK Memphis has a group exhibit at that wraps up this week at Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects in Memphis, TN (USA). Each artist got part of a wall to display his or her works, and guests can also peruse the artists' sketchbooks as part of the exhibit.

Berlin Urban Sketchers (right) and their frequent sketching activities were featured in two articles recently, one in Berline-Artparasites and another in the Berliner Zeitung.

New Urban Sketching Book

A new how-to book (below) on sketching is now available.  Sketching on Location was written by USK Board Member and Moscow, ID (USA) USK Correspondent Matthew Brehm and is a "comprehensive guide to drawing from direct observation ... perfect for those who would like to record their visual experiences of where they live and where they travel."
Matt is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Idaho and has been teaching university-level courses and public workshops on sketching for over a decade

ART MKE Receives 2013 Joyce Award!

On February 4th, The Joyce Foundation announced Art Milwaukee as one of the four recipients of the 2013 Joyce Awards. This prestigious award is granted to artists and nonprofit organizations based on the merit of their artistic idea, quality of work, and an artistic process that offers opportunities for innovative community interaction.  Art Milwaukee in partnership with local artist Reginald Baylor will receive $50,000 in support of their project, TypeFace, from The Joyce Foundation to help in the process of engaging people in its creation.                                                       
                                    

Angelique Power, Joyce Foundation Culture Senior Program Officer, will be hosting a series of information sessions in four cities to meet with interested artists, nonprofit leaders and grant seekers to talk about the program and answer any questions. The Milwaukee Info Session will be held in the Art Milwaukee Offices on Feb. 12 from Noon until 1:30. Lunch will be provided.
