MSC Member Diane Richards passed away 7/24/13

MSC members,

I am forwarding an email from one of our MSC members about another member.  For those of you who cannot place Diane, she sat on the portrait side and did beautiful graphite pencil drawings of the model.  Some of you might remember that one evening she did a drawing of the model looking completely in the opposite direction and it was a spitting image of the model!  Many of us had a good laugh about it and could not understand how she could do it!  Diane battled cancer for years and always had a positive attitude and was more concerned about others than herself.  She will be greatly missed by all who know her.

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Catalano Square near Utrecht on Broadway 7/23/13

Decided to go to Catalano Square as Al is in the 3rd Ward Plein Air Painting Competition. Next week we'll go to the Urban Ecology center. Mostly metered parking except on Erie Street which got full by 7pm. Light is very interesting at this time of day.

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Trimborn Park on 7/19/13

The heat didn't feel so hot and the humidity wasn't so bad because we stayed in the shade and there was a nice breeze. The sky was beautiful with white puffy clouds, and the colors were bright. All in all it was a great day for plein air at Trimborn Farm. There is always so much to see and to paint there.

DCA Mural Artist Reunited with Work by Jim Lundstrom of Penninsula Pulse

DCA Mural Artist Reunited with Work
Giffey delighted to see his work standing up to time
By Jim Lundstrom
David Giffey talks on July 8 with Anne Haberland Emerson. Photo by Jim Lundstrom.
It  Seeing his creation for the first time in 20 years, David Giffey's blue eyes seemed to dance with joy and appreciation across the wavy waters of the mural "Door County/The Water"on the south wall of the Door Community Auditorium entryway.

"There's the joy of designing," Giffey said. "I remember the water was really fun to paint. I was trying to bring in different elements of color because water is not blue."

Confronted by the Door County icons he was commissioned to portray in mural format in the early 1990s, Giffey had the look of a man seeing a dear, old friend after a very long time as he took turns gazing upon "DC/The Water" and, on the other side of the entryway, "DC/The Land."

"I'm delighted to see it," he said. "It looks very bright and lively to me."

The premise of the murals from the start, he said, was to make it local.

Wisconsin Pastel Artists upcoming Fall Exhibit - Summer Wrap-Up, Fall Ahead 8/23 - 10/3/13

from: Ray McInerny <rayjean48@att.net>

Wisconsin Pastel Artists:

We have an exciting exhibit coming soon for our members. It will be held from August 23rd through October 3, 2013. Our exhibit will be at the ART BAR 722 East Burleigh Street, Milwaukee, 53212.

The ART BAR is owned and operated by a professional, working artist who knows his craft and your works will more secure here than in many galleries.

However, only dues paying members of Wisconsin Pastel Artists are eligible to exhibit (as is the case in all exhibits) so we're asking you to make a special effort to submit your 2013 dues and become a participant in this Fall Exhibit. A variety of artworks shown from the majority of our members creates a vibrant and interesting exhibit.

We'd really like all of you to join us again this year by becoming a dues paying member and gaining eligibility for this exhibit called: "Summer Wrap-Up, Fall Ahead." This will be our last exhibit for the year 2013. Please join us, won't you?

A complete notice of this exhibit will be sent soon with all the particulars you'll need to enter. The Exhibit deadline for entry is July 23rd and the drop-off date at the ART BAR is August 18, 2013.

You can keep your membership alive by sending $25.00 dues to the WPA Treasurer.

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Sail Loft on Erie Plaza near Lakeshore Park

The address listed for Lakeshore State Park was 500 N Harbor Drive by that is actually near Discover World off of Michigan Ave and East of Lake Shore Drive.

This park is located off Erie Drive in the 3rd Ward. Probably be best to key in the Sail Loft Spirits and Dining restaurant to find out where to go.

Also near part of Hank Aaron Trail. Wasn't crowded on a weeknight but I bet on the weekends, holidays and festivals like Summerfest, that there would be lots of people. Free parking still available this year along the road all the way into and in Lakeshore Park.

Lots of boats but traveling too fast to paint. Could sketch them though. Can take your boat to this restaurant. Water, park, and urban scenery. People to sketch. Old buildings with new balconies. Can see Allen Bradley clock tower. Near Hoan Bridge.

ILENE's Garden Pictures

Thank you Bonnie!

Cutler Park pictures from John

Thanks John!

How I got started Plein Air Painting by Al

Heard of my first plein air event on Downer Av in Milwaukee from fellow artists Dan Stauff and Bridgette Wolfe.

It was an enjoyable experience participating and meeting other community artists. Having no interest in winning anything or even selling. Two of my paintings sold and left me feeling  good that someone would care to have my work. After that more events came along and I even won a prize in one event and was accepted in Watercolor Wisconsin at the Wustum in Racine.

Painting on location is enjoyable to be outside on site and having some time to yourself.
Presently I paint almost weekly with other plein air artists.

As for subjects, I like things that make a good composition and mostly like architectural things and statues or garden gates and trellises.

Third Ward Plein Air Event - registration due today 7/15/13

The third ward plein air event is the 23 through the 26th - July.  Here is the link for the application.

Nancy O'Keefe would like to be notified by the 15th -  that's tomorrow.  The way it reads is that you turn it the application when you sign in but read it for your self.  Lots of bigger names will be in Door County. Below is Nancy's email address.
