Milwaukee Sketch Club in Wales 8/30/12

Sent: 9/4/12
Hi,  Last Thursday was a wonderful day for Plein Air. I visited Wales, WI, one of my favorite spots, and did a watercolor sketch of the same home that we painted last Winter from our cars. Of course this time the temperature was in the low eighties and there was a breeze and some shade, so it was very nice sitting outside.

Since our last visit the old bank building on Main Street has a new business, a coffee shop, and I would like to come back again to do another watercolor of that.

So here are a few pictures. Regards, John

Drawing Attention by Urban Sketchers - Sept 2012

Drawing Attention
***now available via email to our mailing list subscribers!***
[Sept. 2012]
Issue #27

Sketching Exhibits

The organizers of Rendez Vous Du Carnet de Voyage, a Travel Sketchbook festival that takes place every November in the French city of Clermont-Ferrand, invited four Urban Sketchers to draw the panoramic domes and landscapes of Puy-de-Dome in July. Thanks to Emdé, Lapin, Gérard Michel and Luis Ruiz (Gérard and Luiz pictured right) for representing USK! The public will be able to view this exhibition during the Rendez-vous du Carnet de Voyage, November 16 - 18, 2012.

“Seeing the World, One Drawing at a Time: Urban Sketchers” showcases 90 art works by 38 Urban Sketchers international contributors at the Ackland Museum Store through October 6, 2012. While various local Urban Sketchers groups have held exhibitions, the Ackland Museum Store’s show is the first time in the organization's history that sketches from correspondents around the world have been brought together and shown at a single venue. Thanks to USK Correspondent Laura Murphy Frankstone. who curated our first group show.

A Regional Gathering of Sketchers

Sketchers for Seattle Urban Sketchers, Urban Sketchers Portland and the Whidbey Island Sketchers converged on Tacoma, WA USA for the first (hopefully of many) Pacific Northwest Regional Sketchcrawl. More than 30 sketchers captured the sights in and around Tacoma’s Museum District.

Urban Sketching in the News

The BBC invited 20 artists to provide their interpretation of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant from the Millennium Bridge in London. The poor weather forced many to adapt and even abandon their work halfway through, but here the BBC presents a beautiful selection of their work. Florian Alexander Schmidt, a student at The Royal  College of Art, chose to draw faces from the crowd and many of his fellow artists (at left).

"Sense of Place" is a new feature in the Press Democrat. Every other Sunday, Richard Sheppard’s sketches - along with a brief story - are now being featured in the "Towns" section of this Sonoma County California newspaper (at right). The column will be published online and in the print edition. You can view Richard's inaugural column here.

The digital arts magazine Tribe published a spread of San Francisco sketches by past USK Correspondent Matt Jones. Matt’s sketchers are available to view freely here.

One of the Santo Domingo TV stations produced a great report on the Third International Urban Sketching Symposium. Click here to watch the video on YouTube. A full view of the symposium can be seen on the symposium blog.

Have urban sketching news to share in Drawing Attention? Please send fully written items with links (and graphics, if possible) to: drawingattention at urbansketchers dot org

Until next month... happy sketching.

Lorin Willey Info (critiqued last week at sketch club

From: "Willey, Lorin
Date: September 12, 2012

Hi Folks,

Many of you who were at the Milwaukee Sketch Club critique last evening and who had not participated in my critiques previously, had requested that I give you some information on my background and samples of work. I had mentioned that I am in the process of having a new web page designed and launched.

Keep in mind that this page is not active at this time so I am not able to answer inquiries using the contact form. I am expecting that the page will be active by the end of October. If you want details and enlarged views of the works simply click on them, as usual.

Again, for those who had expressed interest in taking my classes, they occur every Thursday evening from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Clinton Street Gallery at the corner of Main St. and Clinton St. in downtown Waukesha.

Here is the link to my web page:  http://lorinwilley.weebly.com/

Yours in paint,

Lorin

from Plymouth Arts Center: Error on the blogspot

From Donna C. Hahn

Hi Joyce and Art:
We gave you incorrect information for your blogspot.  I think it was incorrect on our website. I’d appreciate it very much if you could update and also include a link that would just go to our homepage: www.plymoutharts.org.
From there, artists can get to the right page.

The Plymouth Paint the Town en plein Air is going to be held beginning Sept. 22 through the 29th.  Jim Hempel’s workshop is Sept. 20 and 21.
The Mill street Quick Paint is Saturday, Sept. 29th.

I’ve also included your class Joyce and Beki Borman’s.

I’ve attached the documents for your review.

I’m hoping you can also list these.

Thanks much.

Jim Hempel at Hidden River Arts Festival this weekend!

Hi All,
I was honored to receive the 1st Place award at the New Berlin plein air over the weekend with my painting "Don's Organic Farm". Farmer Don even came out of the garden to enjoy the reception and help celebrate! I'll be showing my painting of this farm and other rural scenes this weekend at the Hidden River Art Festival http://www.wilson-center.com/visual/hidden-river-art-festival.php in Brookfield. After Sunday, my work will go to my new gallery in Waukesha; the River's End Gallery http://www.riversendgallery.com
If you are able join us this weekend, the show is taking place at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center, 19805 Capitol Dr. Friday from 10-7,  Saturday 10-6, and Sunday 11-4. It's one of the largest art festivals in the state featuring exclusively (80) Wisconsin artists and craftspeople. I'll be showing in the River's End Gallery booth just inside the Sharon Lynne Wilson center, opposite the entrance, and will be working the booth Friday. I would love to see any and all of you who can make it out to the show and stop by for a visit!
As always, I would love to create a special piece for you if you don't see exactly what you are looking for.

Best regards,
James Hempel

WIPAPA: Sept 22nd: Open Paint Day: Wisconsin Ave Bridge Celebration (Downtown)!!

from WIPAPA mricl4hlth@aol.com

I'm so excited for our open paint day on Sept. 22nd!

WIPAPA has been invited to participate in the Riverwalk Art Walk and Wisconsin Avenue Bridge Celebration in downtown Milwaukee! (http://www.bridgepartymke.com/#!home/mainPage)

Here's the scoop:

Show up early (I will be there around 8AM) and find a place to paint around the Riverwalk area.) I suggest you set up within eyesight of each other.

In the event of rain WIPAPA will still paint so come prepared.

We will have a tent set up for us and walls. Please stop and check in there. When you have your work done and framed and wired bring it to us and we will hang it. You will price it and you will receive all the selling price should it sell. We will only except cash and checks.

We will be taking the tent down at dusk however,  while you are free to continue to paint you must show up at the tent before then to pick up any unsold work or any money from sales. You may also sell off your easels and display some work around where you are painting.

If you go to their website you will see the event runs from noon till 10pm and it is being held in conjunction with Doors Open Milwaukee (http://doorsopenmilwaukee.org/) When many of Milwaukee's historic buildings will be open for tours! They are expecting 10,000 people to show up for this and the Wisconsin Ave Bridge is on the map.

Hope to see you all there!!!! (Wendie)

Egg Harbor's Tornado Sculpture Isn't What You Think from Peninsula Pulse

Egg Harbor's Tornado Sculpture Isn't What You Think It Is
Tornado ripped through town 14 years ago
By Myles Dannhausen Jr.
egg harbor tornado statue
The sculpture in front of the old Sunnypoint schoolhouse on Highway 42, about three miles south of Egg Harbor. photo by Myles Dannhausen Jr. (Taken with Instagram).

Its rusted steel stands contorted, twisted to the west where a monster tornado ripped ashore on an otherwise quiet late August evening 14 years ago.

That F3 tornado (the strongest are rated F5) devoured the shoreline just south of Frank Murphy County Park, climbed the bluff toward Highway 42, and tore through the fields and woods a few miles south of the Village of Egg Harbor. It destroyed Sunnypoint Gardens and the Bel Air Motel.

Then the tornado began whipping pieces of the Cornerstone Suites into the rows of the fields surrounding, and it's wide swatch demolished much of the old Sunnypoint Schoolhouse as well. According to the National Weather Service, the twister was on the ground for nearly 14 minutes, carved a path of damage 5.1 miles long, stretched up to a half-mile wide, and caused damage estimated at nearly $7 million.

Miraculously, the massive funnel cloud did not kill a single person and injured only two.

About a year later a sculpture appeared in front of the old Sunnypoint School. It's mangled shape, massive body, and three tiny legs were unmistakable - an homage to the tornado that ripped across the very ground it stood on.
