2 EAST SIDE PLEIN AIR WORKSHOPS SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 3rd

McKinleyMarina by Jim Hempel
Hi All-
I'm fortunate to be out of the studio painting in Door County this week. It's incredibly scenic up here, with so many gorgeous scenes to choose from. Tomorrow morning I'll be painting in the Dockside quick paint in Fish Creek.

VeteransParkLagoon by Jim Hempel
Downer-Cinema by Jim Hempel
Once back in Milwaukee, I'll be offering two outdoor Plein Air painting workshops on the East Side on Friday, August 3rd. The first is a daylong, from 10AM - 4PM. We'll meet at McKinley Marina & Lagoon. The second will be a night plein air painting workshop along Downer Avenue from 7:30-11:00PM. It will be a great day filled with painting and learning. Choose to participate in one or the other, or both. The workshop fee for each is $50.

Here are the basics:
A small pull cart is handy for getting your portable easel and painting gear to a spot where you wish to paint. I have one extra. Let me know if you would like to borrow it ahead of time and I can bring it along for you. I also have 2 extra French easels if you would like to participate, but do not yet own a suitable easel for plein air painting.

The needed materials for the day will be as follows: portable easel, paints, odorless mineral spirits, paper toweling, canvas boards (at least 2 small to medium size), garbage bag to keep things tidy, bag lunch, beverage, hat, jacket, sunblock, etc. If you have an umbrella for your easel it is helpful for bright days or light sprinkles, but not at all necessary. If it's bright and you wish to paint in the shade there are plenty of trees as well as sheltered areas.

I'm planning on having us accomplish 2 different paintings/scenes for the day. One in the morning, and one in the afternoon. During the course of the day I will demonstrate, critique, teach you about color mixing for the plein air palette, how capture immediacy in plein air landscapes, as well as paint alongside you. I'll demonstrate while you eat your lunch, so you can maximize your painting time in the morning and afternoon. We will wrap up at about 4:00PM, but I am amenable to go later if people have the interest and enthusiasm beyond that time frame. Then after a break for dinner, I'll reconvene on Downer with those who wish to enjoy the cool quiet stillness of painting lit street scenes by dusk and night. The Downer Theater with all of it's neon, marquee lights, posters and people has been a favorite thing to paint, but there are interior lit boutiques, bakeries, restaurants, patio dining, Ace hardware, and many other shop windows and subjects to paint along a short 2 block area.

Just let me know by reply to this e-mail if you plan to join us. We are going to have a great day of painting!

Please feel free to email if you have any other questions about this workshop or need to figure out any other arrangements. My cell phone service is virtually non-existent in Door County, so be aware if you call I won't get your message and be able to return your call until I'm south of Green Bay after the weekend. Thanks!

Yours in Art,
- James Hempel

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Cutler Park 7/27/12

Today we were able to sketch the historic monuments and Victorian residences around Cutler Park in Waukesha. But alas, once again during our plein air adventures, we had to end our painting abruptly, and run for cover in the face of the winds preceding an afternoon storm. Neat clouds though.

Palmyra, Spring Lake July 19

We had intended to paint au plein air at the Rushing Waters Fishery last Thursday afternoon, but we were scared off by rain showers and ominous clouds while driving to Palmyra. Instead we stopped at the beach on Spring Lake (across from the BP gas station on anemone) which has a picnic shelter and sketched and painted views of the swimming area, lilly pads, and trees. Thank you John for pictures, etc.!

Preserving & Collecting Wisconsin Art By Bonnie Hartmann, Director of the Miller Art Museum

Preserving & Collecting Wisconsin Art
By Bonnie Hartmann, Director of the Miller Art Museum

A statement from the President of the Art Institute of Chicago regarding its museum permanent collections is echoed by all who collect, conserve, and exhibit:
"An art museum has no greater responsibility than to choose from among the many art works offered, those precious few that should enter its permanent collection. This is a choice born of education, experience, and fine judgment and is always made with the public interest in mind. Indeed, art museums exist in order to build their collections and hold them in trust for the communities they serve. These objects are in every meaningful way the public's collection, assembled over many years and preserved for all time."
nelson
"The Nelson Place," egg tempera, 1968, by Gerhard Miller is one of many pieces in the Miller Art Museum's permanent collection.
The permanent collection at the Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay has the following mission and parameters: "to collect master works of Wisconsin Art from 1900 on - in painting, drawing, prints, and photography."

Documenting and caring for a collection, now over 700 pieces, is an ongoing responsibility for the Curator Deborah Rosenthal. Rarely a day goes by that she is not performing some task specific to collection needs.

Wine: 30 - Moscato

Of all the wine trends witnessed in recent years (think White Zin in the '80s and the rise of New Zealand-style Sauvignon Blanc in the past decade), none of them compare to the phenomenal growth in Moscato consumption that has occurred since 2009.

So what is Moscato? Moscato is the Italian name of a varietal wine made from a white grape from the ancient Muscat family. The official name of the grape is Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, but as it is grown throughout the world.

Recognizing Delmar Dahl

First Baptist Church of Sister Bay recently celebrated the years of service Delmar Dahl has given to the church and community. In recognition of his retirement the church gave $2,800 to the "Partners in Compassion" capital campaign fund at Scandia Village in Dahl's honor.

Burning Ban
Because of the recent dry conditions and no
significant rainfall in the forecast, Emergency Management of Door County (EM) with
cooperation of the Door County Fire Chiefs has placed a temporary ban on open burning
effective immediately.

This ban prohibits any open burning, agriculture burning or similar legal fires until weather conditions improve. Extreme temperatures are expected later this week with little to no rainfall, which will continue to create drier conditions and more need to protect homes, families and properties from the exposure to fire. That means fire departments will not issue burn permits until conditions improve.

For more information, contact your local fire department.
