The Eyes of the Impressionists: Monet & Pissarro Oil Painting Workshop
Paint along with me as we explore the work of two leaders of the French Impressionist movement, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. The work of these two remarkable painters with their dedication to plein air painting demonstrates an extraordinary sensitivity to atmospheric light and color. Judith Gahn Murphy Values & Line Demo, WaterColor & Ink at AC Art Association 4/4/11
Her website is http://www.gahnmurphydesigns.com/
She teaches at MATC, greenfield parks & rec and Nicolet.
She uses 3 palletes with deep wells that she never cleans out. There is a blue, red & green pallet. She puts her yellows on both the red & green pallet. She started out with 6 transparent colors. Then she met Daniel Smith http://www.danielsmith.com/ and now has lots of colors including granular? colors. She mixes all her greens. None from tube. Opaque colors are put on bottom layers. Transparent colors on top. If you put opaque colors on top it can look muddy.
Her watercolor influences were Jean Crane http://www.leslielevy.com/posters_view.php?id=jcran and Terry Hoffman? At UW Madison she worked in acrylics & printmaking.
The difference between acrylics and watercolor is acrylics you can paint by feel & instinct whereas with watercolor you need to have a plan.
She likes to use 300# Fabriano paper, not hot press(No tooth, blotchy). Not arches. (She paints on both sides of the paper.) She doesn't tape her paper down. She places her paper on a Homasote board which is propped up at about a 20-30 degree angle. She used a plastic quart? yogurt/cottage cheese container for her water & only 1 paper towel. She doesn't generally paint wet into wet except in specific areas that she pre-wets with her brush right before applying the color.
She uses a #14 round cornel brush with a point for everything. She lets the paint flow & mix on the paper. She paints light to dark because you need to plan the lights and save them. She paints in layers. Important to leave enough whites.
She's been experimenting with watercolor ground over canvas and likes it. She's heard that you can apply this ground over areas in a painting that are too dark to bring it back but hasn't tried this yet. You have to spray these canvas waterground paintings once you're done.
She generally paints from photos that's she applied poster edge, pen & ink filters to and tweaked the greens, blues & cyans. Occasionally paints from life with still lifes. It takes several sessions for her to finish a painting.
The general steps she followed for this demo was
She uses permanent markers like black/brown felt tip micron markers. She has several but likes 005 micron. She also has started using a bamboo pen and acrylic ink, liquitex from cheap joes and speedball from michaels. She likes the varying line you can get from the pen. Like painting with wood. She tries not to add too many lines, just enough.

Scuppernong Marsh near Eagle 3/31/11
It was a beautiful spring day, sunny and just warm enough to take off your gloves. Some places still had snow but it was mostly gone. There were a few insects out but no biting ones. A lot of interesting things to paint: the old marl factory, springs, streams, white populars, light glinting off the grass, last year's puffy cattails....
Scuppernong has a very nice trail that was a railroad bed. From 1909-1915 a train hauled marl along this grade to the Eagle Lime Products Company warehouse located in Dousman. You can see remains of the old marl plant and marl pit. In addition there are springs where you can see water bubbling up out of the ground.
This is part of Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine State Forest and costs $7 for Wisconsin Residents unless you have a year pass. You have to go across the street and pay in Ottawa Park. There's a DNR pamphlet that tells you about Scuppernong. http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/wildlife_areas/scuppernong.htm
NEW! TUESDAY APRIL CLASS SCHEDULE-JAMES HEMPEL FINE ARTS STUDIO
NEW! ADDITIONAL TUESDAY APRIL CLASS SCHEDULE AT JAMES HEMPEL FINE ARTS STUDIO:
|
All Day Painting Workshop This Friday April 8th - Masterworks from the Milwaukee Art Museum
Developments in painting in the 19th century encompassed a wide range of artistic aims, styles, and subjects. Innovations in working methods and materials led to new perceptions and pictorial possibilities. We can see these developments in the wonderful range and variety of European and American paintings at our own Milwaukee Art Museum.
Paint along with James as we explore in depth select Masterworks of European and American painting from the Museum's collection.
**As an extra encouragement, I will meet those who sign up for the workshop at the Milwaukee Art Museum for an optional walk through study of the artwork this Thursday evening. For those who are able to join us, we will meet at 6:00pm in the Museum lobby.
Everyone has had a great time at all of our past all-day intensive painting workshops.
(A little art history-A lot of painting)
I hope you will be able to join us this time!
When: Friday April 8, 2011

Where: James Hempel Fine Arts Studio
133 W. Pittsburgh Ave, Studio #503 (The Arts Building)
Milwaukee, WI 53204
