Wehr Nature Center 7/16/11

Pictures and writing from Joyce. Thank you!!!

I went to the Wehr Nature Center today and it was wonderful. The scenery was gorgeous and enchanting. The glistening Mallard Lake is covered with lily pads and flowers while the shore is lined with great beds of echinaceas, monardas, and raspberry patches. Goldfinches and butterflies
flit here and there while the insects buzz. Did I mention the frogs croaking and splashing? I followed the trail of wood chips from the parking lot to the waterfall and did a little sketching by the rocky falls. I also photographed some scenes that caught my eye and will send them if I can get
my Iphoto working, etc. The mosquitoes were not bad.

Milwaukee Sketch Club in Downtown Mukwonago 7/13/11

We actually went around to the back of the little red school house museum, sat in the shade, and painted the Stewart house. Comfortably warm with a slight breeze. When we left a mother & daughter were working on the gardens. Pictures from John & Kathy. Thanks!

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Calhoun Park 110709

Pictures and writing from Margo. Thanks Margo!

"I thought you might like to see a few photos I took from the plein air outing on Saturday at Calhoun Park in New Berlin. There was crowd in the parking lot because of kids baseball. Had to park on the street but we were not bothered by any people as we painted. You can use any of these photos if you like. I think I would like to do another plein air in the fall with anyone who is interested, sometime in October."

Jim Hempel Plein Air workshops 7/29

I'll be offering two more outdoor Plein Air painting workshops on the East Side on
Friday, July 29th. The first is a daylong, from 10AM- 4PM.
The second will a night plein air painting workshop along Downer Avenue from 7:30-11:00PM.
It will be a great day filled with painting and learning. Choose to participate in one or the other, or both. The workshop fee for each is $50.

The meeting/painting location for my plein air workshop on July 29th starting at 10 AM will be the south end of Terrace Ave. The park there is the southern tip of Lake Park on top of the bluff overlooking downtown and the lake & marina below. From there you can paint Villa Terrace, the houses/gardens on Terrace, Northpoint Water Tower, trees/playground in the park, or the sweeping park views of the lake, marina and downtown. If you Mapquest Villa Terrace you can get a good look at the exact location.
The meeting spot for the Downer Ave. plein air night painting session beginning at 7:30PM will be the awnings of the bank directly across the street from the Downer Theater.

Here are the basics:
A small pull cart is handy for getting your portable easel and painting gear to a spot where you wish to paint. I have one extra. Let me know if you would like to borrow it ahead of time and I can bring it along for you. I also have 2 extra French easels if you would like to participate, but do not yet own a suitable easel for plein air painting.

The needed materials for the day will be as follows: portable easel, paints, odorless mineral spirits, paper toweling, canvas boards (at least 2 small to medium size), garbage bag to keep things tidy, bag lunch, beverage, hat, jacket, sunblock, etc. If you have an umbrella for your easel it is helpful for bright days or light sprinkles, but not at all necessary. If it's bright and you wish to paint in the shade there are plenty of trees as well as sheltered areas.

I'm planning on having us accomplish 2 different paintings/scenes for the day. One in the morning, and one in the afternoon. During the course of the day I will demonstrate, critique, teach you about color mixing for the plein air palette, how capture immediacy in plein air landscapes, as well as paint alongside you. I'll demonstrate while you eat your lunch, so you can maximize your painting time in the morning and afternoon. We will wrap up at about 4:00PM, but I am amenable to go later if people have the interest and enthusiasm beyond that time frame. Then after a break for dinner, I'll reconvene on Downer with those who wish to enjoy the cool quiet stillness of painting lit street scenes by dusk and night. The Downer Theater with all of it's neon, marquee lights, posters and people has been a favorite thing to paint, but there are interior lit boutiques, bakeries, restaurants, patio dining, Ace hardware, Lixx custard and many other shop windows and subjects to paint along a short 2 block area.

Just let me know by reply to this e-mail if you plan to join us. We are going to have a great day of painting!

LMA at Sharon Wilson Art Center Reception 7/7 5:30-7pm

The League of Milwaukee Artists

juried exhibition

On view: June 1–July 28, 2011
Reception: July 7, 5:30–7:00 pm

The League of Milwaukee Artists formed in 1947 as a visual arts organization whose purpose was to bring together sincere creative artists for the mutual advancement of its members and its works, and to promote interest, appreciation and understanding of art in Milwaukee. In the 1950s the League became the first art group in the midwest to hold outdoor art fairs. Since then the League has become a staple in the Wisconsin arts community and has become a resource for many outstanding Milwaukee area painters. There are over 150 members doing a diverse array of two-dimensional work from a four county area. The League has promoted art through exhibition and fairs since the 1940s in southeastern Wisconsin and has exhibited in such venues as the Museum of Wisconsin Art, The Cedarburg Cultural Center, and the Charles Allis Art Museum.

The exhibition at the Wilson Center will feature over 30 juried members. Selected works will include drawing, oil painting, watercolor, and acrylics.

RSVP for the FREE reception to rsvp@wilson-center.com.

Jim Hempel Plein Air painting workshop at Monches Farm on Friday, July 8th

Hi All,
I will be offering an outdoor Plein Air painting workshop at Monches Farm on Friday, July 8th from 10AM-4PM. This is an absolutely gorgeous place to paint a diversity of subjects ranging from old post and beam barns, split rail fences, water gardens, sheep in verdant pastures, open fields, a glass conservatory, rolling countryside, figurative statuary, row upon row of peonies, ferns, cosmos, and all assortment of bedding plants and flowers, little wagons, chickens-the list of its charming subjects goes on and on. If you haven't been able join me for a day of painting here before, you owe it to yourself to make this opportunity a priority! It will be a great day of painting and learning.

The act of painting outside in nature allows the artist to observe the natural light.
