Wales Woodshop 12/22/11

Overcast day. Lot of interesting buildings in Wales. Met at Pedlars B&B but then decided to paint a woodshop on James Street. Then afterwards we went to have coffee and treats at the Bakery. We decided to hang out in wales for the next couple of weeks unless we change our minds. After January 12, 2012 we will be switching to Friday mornings.

Thank you John for the pictures.

"Portrait Painting - The Classical Method" this Friday

Portrait Painting: The Classical Method

Capturing a person's living likeness on canvas has been a challenge undertaken by extraordinary artists throughout the ages. Masterpieces by Leonardo, Rembrandt, Rubens, and Velazquez are familiar to most of us and inspiring examples of the portrait painting genre.
In this intensive day long painting workshop we will apply the traditional methods and materials of these Old Masters to create a portrait from start to finish.

Paint along with James as he guides you step by step through the classical portrait painting process. This method will begin by establishing accurate proportions and values with an underpainting foundation in monochrome. The second layer in the process will then focus on refining the forms, colors, skin tones, and transitions which shape the features and create a likeness.

To simplify the process we will be providing everyone with the same photo portrait reference as our model for the day.

When: Friday, Dec. 30th 10:00 am - 4:00pm (with a break for lunch)

Where: James Hempel Fine Arts
133 W. Pittsburgh Ave. Studio 503
Milwaukee, WI 53204

Class fee: $50

*a materials list will be sent to those who respond with interest

Cold, windy, drizzled at times. We could see Sunset Park, the bike trail, railroad tracks (no trains went by) and the model airplane place. Very rough railroad crossing. Did not attempt to take my car across it. We were south of Co Rd DE (Sunset Drive) and Merrill Hills Rd (Co Rd TT). Thank you John & Kathy for pictures

Stacey Williams-Ng at Boswell Bookstore tonight at 7pm

Tonight at Boswell Bookstore!

Hi everyone!

Just a note and/or reminder that I will be a guest speaker at Boswell Books tonight, at 2559 N. Downer Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53211. I will be talking about my experience publishing book apps for the iPad, and I'll also be doing a read-aloud of the book for kids, and a signing event.

Don't worry if you don't have an iPad... it's the hardcover storybook I'll be signing (of course).

It's at 7pm, I hope you can make it! If not, forward to friends you know who have kids. Books make great Christmas presents (OK! shameless plug! But they do, OK!?)

Greco Gallery: An Artist's Boutique (Penisula Pulse)

Greco Gallery: An Artist's Boutique
By Katie Lott Schnorr

A newcomer to Third Avenue, Greco Gallery is named after owner and founder Kelly Avenson's mother's maiden name, and a black and white photo of her grandpa, Nick Greco, serves as the unofficial logo. It's a fitting choice, as the gallery itself feels like the best of family - diverse, productive and supportive.

"I imagined a place where artists could work together, not against each other, and hopefully sell some art," she said. "So I thought, what if I created a co-op?"

The variety of styles and media in one intimate space feels homey but never crowded. "Even though we have three jewelry artists and three painters, they are all so different," said Avenson. "That's what people love."

Demo by Fujie Yamaguchi Moses 12/13/11

She works from life. Will repeat the same subject manner several times to thoroughly know it. One summer she painted irises. Does not recommend painting from photos.

Uses winsor newton watercolors, bamboo pen, hake brush, Japanese round brush, daniel smith kolinski sable brushes. She had us try the brush. Very nice. She mixes up paint fresh each time. Uses 3 dishes of water to keep colors clear. She mixes colors in shallow trays that she got many years ago from Scientific American. Told us always to wet brush before touching pigment.

Uses Japanese wash paper and 140 arches paper on pad. In her demo she used about 11x14 pad?

Here is a link to more information about her and her art:

The exhibition takes a contemporary approach, while it emphasizes the possibilities inherent in painting on paper in a wide range of sizes and formats. Encouraged to experiment and explore all the possibilities of painting on paper, the artists in the show have created works as diverse as their own imaginations.

Figure Painting: A Classical Approach

Figure Painting: A Classical Approach

The challenge of portraying the human figure in a sensitive and perceptive way has long been of vital concern in the training and practice of the traditional painter. In this workshop we will cover the classical approach to figure painting from start to finish as we study in depth two masterworks of the genre. In the preliminary stage we will develop full underpaintings in monochrome to accurately establish the proportions and pose of the figures with a carefully observed foundation of value and shape. The successive layers will focus on seeing and mixing nuanced colors to capture the subtle and wide variety of skin tones from the rich shadows and ruddy midtones to the creamy lights and pearlescent highlights.

Bethesda Church 12/8/11

Cold but clear. We got to meet the church's friendly caretaker and see the inside of the church.

See church brochure for more info about this church. It used to be part of Kettle Moraine Parish. Oldest Welsh Presbyterian Church in Waukesha. The road that the church is on used to go through to Sunset but it doesn't anymore.

If you want to know more about Welsh settlements in Wisconsin read "The Welsh hills of Waukesha County: a photographic study of stewardship" by Patrick Byrne, text by Theodore Mesmer; foreword by Martin C. Perkins.

Thank you John for the excellent pictures and setting up this tour through Wisconsin's Welsh Hills.

The Daily Practice of Painting By Sally Slattery

For their current exhibit, the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek challenged seven artists -- purposefully chosen to showcase a variety of styles and painting techniques -- to create a painting a day for 30 days.

"The art school is all about education," says Director of Marketing and Exhibitions Kay McKinley-Arneson. "We focused on what goes on with an artist who wants to master their technique."

Still Life Painting: A Classical Approach

The Old Masters and traditional oil painters have turned to the genre of still life painting to develop their skills and hone their sensibilities. Please join us for an intensive day long exploration of the classical still life painting process to discover how these great artists achieved brilliant effects of light, realistic textures, and poetic compositions. We will follow the classical method of painting start to finish, beginning with the creation of a resonate monochrome underpainting foundation of accurate forms and values, followed by a second paint layer of full and varied color to capture a range of luminous effects from the sheen of metallic reflections to nuanced hues of fruit and flowers.

Brookdale Village near Genessee Depot just south of Wales

This was a thriving creamery back in abt 1830. Now there is an antique store in the village. The yellow building had a water tower. Nearby was an ice house.

Thank you John for the excellent pictures!

Call for Art by DeLind Gallery

Call for Art
“Winter”
From January 11-February 11, DeLind Gallery will mount an art show simply called “Winter”. I’m seeking one, or two pieces of art from many area artists, that loosely fit into this heading. Please consider this opportunity to perhaps sell an artwork (or 2) during the season we Wisconsinites tire of the quickly.

What qualifies as a “Winter” painting? Of course, the obvious is something snowy. Surprise me....and the Winter gallery night crowds. Indoors by the fire? A glass of wine? A bountiful table? A beach in Mexico or Florida? They ALL qualify.

To hang your artwork in the show, I need your paintings here by Saturday, Jan 7th. Settlement for the show, and pick up of unsold artworks will be by Feb 18th. It can be sooner, of course.

I am generally seeking smaller paintings. As much as I wish I could, I probably won’t have room on my walls to hang everything offered. Artworks need to be framed.

I am partial to plein aire, but that is not a deal breaker. I also love beauty, simplicity, humor, people, animals.....surprise me! Send your submissions to my e-mail. Thank you!
Bill
