Very nice day, upper 60s, no wind & mostly sunny. Fall colors just starting. Lots of interesting structures crossing the river, bridges, a dam.... Water was very clear and still with lots of reflections. Geese were close enough to sketch.

Next week Monday (10/4) we are meeting at Indian Head Park about 2:30pm:
  • Turn right (north) onto Hwy 83 from the expressway Hwy 43
  • Go under the railroad bridge
  • Immediately make a left onto Front St.

Jim Hempel Night Painting Plein air on

Jim Hempel Plein Air Workshop at Cupertino Park, Sunday September 26

An email from Jim:
Hi Everyone!,
I hope you got outside to enjoy the beautiful weather today. I am catching up on some missed summer by squeezing in some plein air painting workshop opportunities at picturesque locations around the city before the weather cools and the colors change.
I'll be teaching an all-day plein air painting workshop on Sunday the 26th of September at Cupertino Park. Several of you have specifically asked for a painting workshop at this site. This is a beautiful spot at the north end of South Shore Park just north of the South Shore Yacht Club. This picturesque marina of sail and power boats has a backdrop of the Milwaukee skyline and the Hoehn bridge beyond. There are great views of the boats, colorful sails, sparkling water, a pier with benches, gulls, ducks, fishermen... The wooden pier is a large "L" shape, affording us plenty of space to spread out, be out over the water closer to the boats in the marina, and to have different views/options to paint.
We'll meet at 10 AM and paint through the day until 4PM or so. There is a bathroom and water on site.
Please bring a lunch, an easel suitable for outdoor painting, your painting supplies, and two to three small - medium sized panels or canvases. Other media are welcome as well. If you are new to working outdoors and need more details on what to bring, please contact me by e-mail or phone, and I'll be happy to let you know what you will need.
Please contact me with interest or questions, and I'll forward you all the other details!
Hope you can join us!
Best regards,
-Jim Hempel

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Mukwonago Park in Waukesha County

Despite the threat of a possible storm we decided to paint. So we picked an open sided shelter with a 360 degree view to stand under. There was a picnic table under the shelter and wooden counters on 2 sides. The temperature was quite pleasant at 70F with a breeze. No mosquitoes. Although it started out cloudy by the end of our painting outing the sun had come and no storm came through. This is one of those locations where there is so much to paint that it is hard to choose and towards late afternoon there were people walking and playing with their dogs.

Mukwonago park is located just east of Beulah Road on county road LO between county road E and county road I which is west of downtown Mukwonago. The entrance fee for fall on weekdays is $3. Annual stickers for Waukesha County residents are $25/ car and for non residents it is $36/car. For more info see www.waukeshacountyparks.com .

Next Monday at 2:30pm we plan to meet at Mukwonago River.
  • Turn right (north) onto Hwy 83 from the expressway Hwy 43
  • Go under the railroad bridge
  • Immediately make a left onto Front St.
  • Then turn left onto a gravel driveway by all the electrical stuff
When you park in the lot you will see a dam on Mukwonago river to your right and the railroad bridge to your left.

As always, email us if you'd like to meet up with us.

We met in Holy Cross Cemetery at the Burleigh entrance west of 60th st and just east of Appleton Ave. It was threatening to drizzle so we decided to head over to Dineen Pk to shelter at their Pavilion (6609 W Vienna St. http://www.county.milwaukee.gov/DineenPavilion23692.htm ) by going NW on Appleton Ave then making a right at Vienna Ave at the traffic lights. However ended up not needing the Pavilion. Weather was partly cloudy, about 66 F with a brisk breeze.

About the Milwaukee Sketch Club

The Milwaukee Sketch Club meets every Tuesday evening (7:00 - 9:00pm) from the first part of September through May at St. Peters Episcopal Church at 81 st. and Lincoln Avenue in West Allis, Wisconsin.

On our weekly sketch nights we have two models; a portrait model and a nude model. We have a different nude model each week but the portrait model poses for two consecutive weeks. We ask that the portrait model wear the same clothing both weeks and the same hair style. Our nude model starts out with short five minute poses ending with a long half-hour pose at the end of the evening. The portrait model poses for half-hour at a time with a short break in between. We pay both models $25.00 per evening of modeling.

We welcome new members that are interested in painting and sketching. Artists can use any medium of their choice except for oils because of the solvent odor. If the artist uses a messy medium we ask that they bring a drop cloth or something to cover the chair they are using for supporting their materials and the floor beneath them. Our fees are $85.00 for the year. See
http://milwaukeesketchclub.blogspot.com/2011/05/milwaukee-sketch-club-winter-indoor.html for our 2011-12 winter schedule.

We also have plein air during the summer with some hearty artists continuing into the colder months. They meet at different interesting areas each session. (See previous blog postings) The plein air is free.
