Milwaukee Sketch Club at Hank Aaron State Trail near Miller Park

It started out a bit chilly and overcast this morning but later on the sun came out and it was quite comfortable. A fisherman said that you can get 25 pound salmons out of the river. There were some people walking along the trail too. Bathrooms were closed.

Upcoming Outings:
  • 10/3 (Sat) McKinley Marina
  • 10/6 (Tue) Veterans Park on Milwaukee Lakefront

Directions to Hank Aaron State Trail

Probably will meet by Klement's Sausage House around 9.

Directions:

Driving east or west on Interstate Highway 94, take exit 308B and go south on State Highway 341 (Miller Park Way) After entering on to Highway 341 move as soon as possible to the right lane and take the exit marked Miller Park. Follow around the curve and at the first set of lights turn right. At the next set of lights turn left into the “Expos” parking lot. This is just south of the Klement’s Sausage Haus.

Park here and take the pedestrian bridge across the river. You'll see the Hank Aaron State Trail sign at the bridge's east end. The trail is down the hill from the sign via ramps at the north and south ends of the walkway.

You can also take 44th Street from the south and follow signs to the General Parking Area

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Lion's Gorge near Grafton

Lion's Gorge is beautiful and well worth the 40' drive. The trails are well maintained. This park is geared towards hikers so be prepared to walk. It's semi-rustic with no fee, portapotties but no running water, so bring water. The bluff had fingers going into Lake Michigan and there was a platform over a swampy area where the greens were just incredible. There's also a beach. Perfect day and weather. Leaves just starting to turn.

To get there, take Hwy 43 to exit 92 (Grafton Hwy 60 W & Hwy Q E), then go east on Hwy Q over the railroad tracks to the first stop sign which is Hwy C/Lakeshore Rd. Make a Left. Start looking for a small brown sign labeled Lion's Gorge. It's approximately the 2nd road. Make a right and follow the signs.

A hiker suggested we ought to go to Menomonee Park in Menomonee Falls just north of Townline & Good Hope Rd. They have a fishing pier and a path around the quarry. The firefighters go there to train too.

This weeks upcoming, loosely scheduled, Plein Air Outings:
  • 9/23 (Tue) Hoyt Park 1800 N Swan Blvd Wauwatosa (N) http://www.friendsofhoytpark.org

  • 9/26 (Sat) Downtown Bayview, near out of business Omega Burger stand. Aproximately KK & bay st. (E) or could go to Retzer Nature Center, http://friendsofretzer.org/09/ in Waukesha?

Milwaukee Sketch Club at Juneau Park

We were at the northern border of the LMA Plein Air Collaboration downtown painting competion border so I got to see some people that I haven't seen all summer. There's a replica of Solomon Juneau's log cabin/trading post at the north end of the park, an overlook to the lake on the south and at least one statue plus neat looking buildings surrounding the park. Bathroom was closed.

This Saturday is Lion's Gorge.
Next Tuesday is Hoyt Park.

Milwaukee Sketch Club at the Harley Davidson Museum

The Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee is a great place to sketch and paint. The museum is surrounded on 3 sides by a river which has a walkway around it. There are bridges, interesting industrial buildings, beautiful plants, downtown city skyline, plus the museum itself with a lot of interesting reflections and motorcycles of course. A very large piece of land, lots of parking and easy to get to. Today was very sunny with a light breeze. We painted on the south side next to one of the rivers.

This Saturday 9/12 is the New Berlin Farmer's Market, near Moreland Ave & National Ave.

Next Tuesday 9/16 is Juneau Park near East Kilbourn & North Prospect Ave
